I've gotten the bug lately for a gold watch. Most of what I wear are Rolex, so I'm inclined to buy another, but before I do, I wanted to ask the group for suggestions.

I'd like something that's "chunky", over 42mm, and not too expensive if at all possible.

    Thoughts?

Given the price of gold: chunky, gold, and not to expensive are probably mutually exclusive.

Fair enough. I guess I just mean I don't want to pay up just to have the privilege of being the first owner.

I bought a used 18k YG Omega that I love. It's right about that size, although I have it on a strap.

They don't hold their value as well as Rolexes, but are a correspondingly good buy second-hand.

I've been thinking of a Graham Chronofighter - in steel.. but they make them in gold as well. its pretty large - i think in gold - $15-$18K used.

Gold gold is kind of old fashioned according to the faddish watch world.
    Its all about Rose gold.
Personally this is where I would go.
There is a Breguet rose gold Transatlantic on the Rolex forums for 10K (?).
Ive seen Blanpain rose gold Lemans's sell at 6Kish.

I knew a fellow that wore his Rolex gold President as a daily beater.
Kind of like the way he thought.

If you just want something that you may wear a few times, then I'd suggest maybe a Nixon watch to see how you like it. They're really inexpensive and most of their models come in a gold-toned stainless steel. I know they are Japanese mov't and mineral crystal but the price reflects that.

    Here is a pretty cool 42mm day/date:
The Sentry SS | Men's Watches | Nixon Watches and Premium Accessories

    A chunky 48mm:
The Corporal SS | Men's Watches | Nixon Watches and Premium Accessories

And here is a 51mm chunky chrono:

Thanks B. the 42 looks good, but I'm not sure I could wear a fake.

I stopped by the AD today and took a look at a few Rolex they had in stock. At this point, I'm leaning towards the gold GMT.

Rose Gold is for the ladies. Stick to YG. Go Rolex or go home.

Sat next to a guy on a plane wearing the JLC Reverso in gold on a black alligator strap. Probably the classiest watch I've ever seen.

I am a Rolex guy as well so the first gold watch I got was a yellow gold Yacht Master II. I got that about 3 years ago. Fantastic watch and its a very good size, the biggest you can get from Rolex @ 44 mm.

However, the following year I saw this IWC Big Ingenieur Chronograph Rose Gold and fell in love. It just looks classier with the brown leather strap while the Yacht Master is a bit more sporty. Both great watches, both highly recommended. The IWC @ 45.5 mm is also bigger than the Rolex which makes it even more impressive.

Well both this AP Royal Oak and the IWC Ingenieur were designed by he same legendary watchmaker Gerald Genta. The similarities are easy to spot once you handle both watches.
Having said that the new Gold Royal Oak Offshore (44mm) with the black ceramic bezel and rubber strap is a magnificent watch and I would very much like to get one. The fact that it costs upwards of $50,000 makes it a bit more difficult to pull the trigger :)
