pre '99 cars have no stability control. Makes them interesting to drive on the wet. Also check the rear differential, it's welded to the undercarraige. The welds show through the trunk, if they're popping off, keep moving. Lots of othe rissues as well. Cooling system has a lot of plastic parts, they tend to fail over time. Fan clutch for the cooling system can go as well. There's a good site for used M Roadsters out there, google for it.

Probably a $8-10K USD car if in decent shape.

Buy one here and export it.

What kind of duties will they charge you?

I sold mine with 90,000 miles on it (a 2000 that was in great condition) for $12,500.

Geez, looks to me like you're getting gouged.

Euro version has more HP than the US version, but don't know about 321HP as stock out of the box. US was 240HP

Early M roadsters had the s52 engine which was 240hp. In 2001 we got the s54 engine which is 320hp. If you look, there is a big price difference between the cars with the s54 vs the s52.

I have never driven one myself, but I want one badly. Future classic..

I had a 2000 M Roadster with full Dinan package. It was a MONSTER. The torque was insane.

    Loved that car.

Actually unlike the coupes the s54 roadsters do not hold that big of a premium over the s52 cars. There was a really nice estoril s54 car that sat down here for 13k for months. Coupes on the other hand are insane. A friend of a friend somehow picked up a mint s54 phoenix gelb coupe for 16k.

The coupes do command a premium over the roadsters, but still the s54 is a premium over the s52 in either car. If you see an s54 with reasonable miles for $13K again...please tell me!

These cars are only going to get more expensive from here on out.

The M coupe is such a cool car. There is a reason those and the 1 M Coupe are going up in value. They are funky, awkward looking cars that just seem like a blast to drive.

I had a 98, drove past Don Rosen BMW one morning and it was sitting in the showroom so you could see it from the streets. It was mine before lunch. I enjoyed that car, cant remember that I did to it but I'm sure it was something.

Correct. I believe the early euro cars had the s50b32 which was the same as the e36 and then in 2001 everyone got the s54.

These cars are absolutely gorgeous and have been undervalued forever. Definitely considering grabbing one at some point. Man they are pretty

My friend had a 240hp car for about 4 years. I drove it several times and I was impressed.

It would be a great car for a DD or an addition to a collection. I could seriously consider it for my bunch.

    Good luck

From 1998-2000, US Z3Ms had the S52B32 engine, basically a bored and cammed iteration of the straight 6 from the standard 3-series. European, Canadian, and other markets received the M-division S50B32 engine which is completely different in design, with much higher output and redline. A true ground-up M engine, which was not available in the states due to cost/emissions. From 2001-2002, all Z3Ms received the S54B32, which was the M-division's successor to the S50B32.

I have an S52 coupe. Coming from a 996 as a DD, I wish I would have gotten an S54, that power difference would really make the car great in my book. But it is a very tossable car and has been on my bucket list for years. Much more fun to drive than the E36M IMO.

Just have the rear floor board inspected by a BMW tech before purchasing. The rear diff has a tendency to rip the rear frame/floor out.
