Just found this over on the other board. Very impressive results but wonder why a Ferrari was not included? I am also surprised but the GT3's results.

There will be much hand-wringing over the slow GT3 time compared to C7Z06 for sure - 5 + seconds is an eternity and if really representative of the performance delta Stuttgart has got to be upset. Of course it would be interesting to see average lap times for 5-10 laps and see what the delta is, but fact is the Z06 laid down an impressive lap in this test.

Amazing, second only to the 918 Spyder.....for 1/10th the price!

And yeah, what happened with it's nearest competitor....the GT3 was almost 6 seconds in arrears.

Maybe Porsche needs to go back to a 7-speed manual? ;-P

I agree. Everyone keeps saying mid engine is the way forward. If so then imagine a mid engine vette. It will destroy all or the saying is a myth.

It's a myth. Even though I own several 'mid engine' cars, the Vette has had the motor front/transaxle in the rear configuration which produces a 'perfect' 50/50 weight distribution. Which is the purpose of a mid engined car.

    Go figure!

you nailed it! But I wish the mags would point this out too. The near 50/50 balance is perfect or the 458 would prove this otherwise. The current Z06 is off the charts and here I am looking to change over to a Ferrari.

Not even close... You've been reading too many magazines and not spending enough time on the track. The objective of a mid engine car is to get more than 50% of the weight on the rear wheels.

It's been that way since the early 1960's when the power available overcame the limitations of the front engine configuration. A car with more weight over the driven wheels can put more power down coming off of the corner and get down the straights faster because of that. And OBTW most mid engine cars have more than 55% of their weight on the rear axle.

A mid-engine Corvette would be a super car of the first order, and would be substantially faster than the current front engine car.

To give you an example as to the limitations of the front engine configuration you only need to do a simple comparison. The 400 hp C5 Z06 has the same rear wheel torque in first gear as the 500 hp C6 Z06. The much higher torque C6 has a much taller first gear ratio, so the torque the at the rear axle comes out the same. The reason for this is that is all the power the car can put down and if you geared it the same it would just smoke the rear tires. The C6Z gets to over 60 mph in first gear, so the zero to 60 time simply isn't going to get much better unless you can get a higher percentage of weight on the rear wheels.

That's pretty much the rationale for it. Once you get much more than 500 hp the current configuration is limited and you aren't going to go that much faster. To get beyond that you've got to go with either 4 wd (expensive and heavy) or go to a mid-engine layout.

Impressive times. The z06 and the Cadillacs are fast. The 991 gt3, f12 and 4c are slow.
