Friend of mine has 1954 Mercedes Benz 2 door coup in super condition. When the car is parked in the garage there is a strong smell of fuel filled the air which makes it very unpleasant and dangerous. I understand those days there was no emission control and catalytic converters. Is there any way this issue can be eliminated or fixed. Thanks.

Recently he replaced all the hoses so there is no leak at least visual but the gas smell is terrible, it is like having open gas tank even worse.

You can still have leaks from seals in carbs and fuel injection components. Fuel pump as well. Ethanol can eat fuel filters and cause a bad leak. Its horrible stuff. A month or two in storage can cause problems.

Could be a pin hole leak in the gas tank, especially if it's aluminum.

Fuel cap will be vented but should still have a seal. Perhaps start there.
The carb float bowls vent to the atmosphere too so fuel will always be evaporating.
Better garage ventilation might be the only remedy.
