Improving the range on an electric car will be achieved by better battery technology, more efficient motors and less weight. Quick charging could go someway to alleviate the problem too.
But asking electric cars to carry the extra weight of an IC generator with its fuel supply is not really tackling the problem head on, is it?

I could be done on heavier vehicles like buses and trucks though, where weight isn't so critical.

Because an electric car with an onboard, gasoline-powered power source is called a Prius.

Problem with any small generator is the cost to generate per unit, the bigger the generator the cheaper the costs. If you are charging off the grid the power is coming from huge machines with very low costs, your honda is eating fuel to produce not much.

So you are going to sit that on the ground next to the car and let it putter away all night and hope its still there in the morning?

As Kaiv says that generator is useless... it produces the same amount of power as the you get out of a domestic wall socket. If you want to charge a Tesla inside a week you need a much bigger unit than that.

    So many obstinate people here
    Negative till death...

That illustration of a honda gen is for instance sake only

Obviously you dont leave it where it is subject to theft.

My inquiry was why does tesla not offer a mobile recharger in case you are out of charge 50 miles from nearest station

Because gasoline is evil. You don't understand Tessa. It's not about making sense.
