Tesla is aiming to steal the limelight from much bigger companies by confirming it will bring into production this electric-drive Tesla Model S in the third quarter of 2011. The 196-inch (4.98m) Model S is the more practical vehicle from Tesla who also build the Tesla Roadster sports car.

Powering the car is a battery pack made up of 8,000 cells. This gives a range of about 300 miles (483km). Batteries are housed on the floor which frees up plenty of space in other places. For example the space under the traditional bonnet is used for storage. It's a big car which can accommodate five adults plus two children in rear-facing seats under the hatch.

Lightweight is the way to go and Tesla has made sure the Model S keeps its weight down to 3,825lbs (1735kg) by using mostly aluminium in its body construction. It achieves a drag coefficient of about .27 which is lower than the Roadster's .35. A single-speed transaxle is used to drive the liquid-cooled 9-inch motor so fewer parts are fitted.

Tesla does not seem to have traded performance for practicality on this car. The 0 - 60mph sprint is covered in 5.6 seconds, the quarter mile in 14 seconds and top speed is 120mph (193km/h). It will brake from 60 - 0mph within 135 feet. There is a Sport version planned which will dip under 5 seconds in the 0 - 60mph dash.

A warranty of 3 to 4 years for the car and 7 to 10 years for the battery pack is expected to be offered. Good news for countries like South Africa, Japan, Australia and the UK is that the Model S will also be sold in right-hand-drive. Indicative pricing is US$49,900.

umors are flying around today about a possible successor to the McLaren F1. The company is supposedly planning a 1,000 unit-per-year run on a new supercar that could begin production by 2011.

Aside from the new F1, Autoweek is reporting on two upcoming new McLaren models, including the McLaren P11. Pegged to compete with the Ferrari F430, the P11 could come to market within a couple of years at a price around $200,000. "The P11 is the building block for the whole of the McLaren automotive range," said Frank Stephensen, McLaren Automotive Design chief. Another sportscar, called the P8, could be out by around 2015. The Porsche 911 competitor may lead McLaren to up production to 4,000 vehicles per year.

The McLaren exec was once in charge of development on the new Fiat 500, the new MINI Cooper, the Maserati MC12, and the BMW X5. From his track record it would not be surprising to see him try to produce iconic vehicles for McLaren that are both unique and innovative.

Stephensen has said that the F1 replacement will have a top speed of about 240 mph. Previous reports have said the car will have a mid-mount, roughly 6-liter V8 engine. Ceramic brakes will likely be needed on a car like the new F1. Implying that the development is far from finished, Stephensen said, "I am looking at a clean sheet of paper for the F1 replacement, and we are still trying to see what directions we want it to go in, in terms of its design."

But the F1 replacement may not be as important as the newer models. "The P11 is the building block for the whole of the McLaren automotive range," Stephensen said. We look forward to seeing what comes from McLaren's deeper push into commercial sales.

Maserati presents its GranTurismo MC, a GT4 European Cup racer based on the GranTurismo S road car that looks tame enough to take to the streets.

That may be the reason the car exists in the first place, since Maserati claims it chose to turn the GranTurismo S into a GT4 racer because it is the racing category closest to production vehicles. If so, then the numbers may not have to be overwhelming as the racer still looks like a road car but may just be wild enough to do well in the GT4 competition.

The GranTurismo MC comes with a 4.7 liter V8 engine that produces 450 hp and giving the car a weight to power ratio of 3.4 kg/hp. What distinguishes the drivetrain most, though, is the electro-actuated transmission with the MC shift (Maserati Corse), a system that reduces gear shift time to 40 milliseconds.

The MC will be made available for private teams to race in the GT4 European Cup next year (2010) and will also compete in GT4 events in the second half of the 2009 season.

The car will be sold directly from Maserati Corse at a cost of 135,000 euros plus VAT (value-added tax).

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK was spied testing at the Nürburgring. Not much testing was completed though because after only one lap the engine started giving out smoke. The car came to a complete stop on a section of the ‘Ring called Brünnchen. Thereafter one of the occupants leapt out of the car with a fire extinguisher and put out whatever was causing the smoke.

What may very well be the inevitable is upon GM and the company is finally acknowledging it. GM is preparing itself for bankruptcy.

According to Reuters, GM is currently conducting an "intense" and "earnest" effort to prepare for the possibility of a bankruptcy filing. Sources close to the troubled Detroit automaker report that GM is considering splitting the company in two, with a "new" GM made up of its more successful brands and operations, while an "old" company consisting of its unprofitable units is splintered off.

A new GM would become unburdened by the huge amount of unsecured debt held by bondholders (estimated at 27.5 billion US dollars), who would lose much of the value of their bonds in the event of a bankruptcy. The new company would still assume some creditor debt and other obligations currently on GM's books, depending on the arrangement reached in the bankruptcy proceeding.

GM's new chief executive Fritz Henderson says he still hopes to spare the company from bankruptcy and restructure without it. But upon becoming CEO recently, Henderson said he would be ready to do it if it became necessary.

this all sounds a bit crooked to me

I'm in trouble so I'll split the house down the middle and saddle the wife with all the debt for the part she owns

my part is all paid for and contains all the assets while she has got all the debt ... sounds like a good plan but will it float ?
