As I clearly stated ...that engine was rebuilt in Italy...while (rod) bearings do not usually look as bad as Martins...these Main bearings did not go 60,000 miles !

Hei, the engine looks really good inside. To get an overviev before dismantle you may have done a test of compression and a lubrication analysis. Maybe the engine is far away from damage. Too late anyway now. My engine was worn out after 30.000km because of very long periods of non use and unprofessional awakening. The engine was driven without thermostat and I think a combination of high revving with cold and wrong oil did kill the bearings. Picture shows the protocol of my documentation after dismantle. The bearings are rubbish but the crankshaft is perfectly fine. Martin.

Actually I have seen bearings like yours on cars used regularly ! But... rod bearing wear is usually the result of lubrication starvation, because the Urraco oil supply to the rods and camshafts is greatly reduced when the oil pickup starts sucking air due to poor oil control in the pan...that is why an Accusump is vital if you drive hard through corners !

The whole point (of bearings) is that you get wear on the bearings, not the crank journals.

Using **** oil that drains off parts when not in operation does not help either !

I have personally taken apart Lambo V8 motors driven hard and making far more power, with almost 0 wear on bearings using good oils like Pennzoil Race oils...

Hei Paul, Accusump seems a good idea but in my case not necessary yet. It compensates very good a dry sump for a few seconds. BMW had AFAIK problems with the M5 model in the 80s because they were hard driven on the oval track and the oil snorkel in the sump sucked air because the oil was sideways in the engine and not in the bottom. This is surely a common problem of standard oil sump configuration. I do not really imagine why my car had those remarkable wear at the connection rod bearings. Btw, the crankshaft bearings looked not really better... maybe it was a combination of cold inadequate oil, brainless use and water in oil due to a leak at a cylinder liner. I will never find out.

To have control over the wear I check the oil at every time I change it by a chemical analysis of wear parameters, warm up the car smoothly and do not stress the engine until oil and water have 80 degrees centigrade. The red light for oil pressure warning turns on at approximately 1.8kg, so there is still safety when it starts to glow.

Thanks for your input and sharing your experiences. Very helpful.

Nice idea about the accusump, I will check!

On the other hand, even though the engine was perhaps a still in a good shape, I wanted to start with a fresh engine for its 100'000 km birthday. So that I can really know where it started from and add many more miles on it!

    Martin,

Your main bearings seem to be "etched" to some degree, perhaps by "antifreeze" (top # 3)
(#1 top) shows more normal mechanical "wear" patterns...how many kilometers were on the motor at tear-down ?

Hei Paul, the engine had around 31.000km until I recognised the damage by first lubricant analysis when I just purchased it.... Without that, maybe the engine had been crashed while running. So I was able to fix in advance. Martin

Although fitted luggage was not available for the Miura or the Countach, the P250 sales brochure featured a set of luggage. I wonder if anyone actually purchased a set...

Never saw one. I wonder if it is just some normal luggage that they used for the photoshoot. But it would be great if we discovered that they actually made it!

I have also seen a Zagari image, presumably taken for a sales brochure that never materialised, that shows a set of luggage next to the Silhouette prototype, including a suit carrier draped over the edge of the boot...
