More Old Photos

It seems 0012M now rebodied in original style has it's own engine 0010M reinstalled.
The engine was in 0008M for a while. What engine does the latter now have?

Great to get your story about 0012M. And yes, the car has been put back to original as it was in 49. In fact when I bought the car in 97 from Darryl Greenamyer , all information available let us belief that originally it had a barchetta Touring body. It was quite a surprise to learn from Ferrari that this info is wrong and that the car had a special spyder body made at Ferrari. I had to give up my dream to own a barchetta.

Cavallino Magazine had a nice article by Antoine Prunet about the car and his restoration in the February/March 2003 issue.

I still have the Scaglietti like body and the 3l engine, which I belief is a GTE engine (no 3117). Will keep all items together with the car.

Can anyone help with the following cars' histories after their respective accidents? Did they get rebuilt or was this the end of the line for both? Thanks!

#16 Ferrari 246 of von Trips which was 'destroyed' in a first lap collision at Lesmo corner after colliding with Schell's BRM at the 1958 Italian GP at Monza.

#18 Ferrari TR250 3-litre of Gurney & Kessler (driven here by Kessler) after colliding with the spun out #11 Jaguar D-Type driven by Jean-Marie "Mary" Brussin who sadly perished. Apparently the Ferrari burned completely, but I have no follow up image of the aftermath. 1958 Le Mans around ~7 hours into the race.

#0666TR was the prototype 250TR built from a 290S chassis and Tipo 128 engine and ran Le Mans from '58 thru '60, despite hearing the same thing and the picture in the thread below looking pretty bad, #0666TR was apparently not wrecked at LM in '59 and returned to Maranello where the front and rear were repaired, the car had yet another minor accident before it was sold to a US owner who set fire to it in '64 as part of an insurance scam. Apart from some damage to the partly original bodywork it didn't cause that much damage and the car later spent two decades with Betz & Peters who restored it with the engine from #0724TR before sale to Jon Shirley. He in turn had Butch Dennison restore it around the original engine which had been bought from Pete Lovely and then sold it at Goodings Pebble Beach sale in 2011 for a then record $16.39 million.

XVe Grand Prix Automobile de Monaco

On the first lap, the 16 cars qualified to start, swept in a tight bunch into the gasworks turn. Fangio came out first, followed by Moss, who was so close that his car is invisible in the photograph, but his head (white helmet) seems close enough to read Fangio's rev counter. Collins in the Ferrari lies in third.

On the third lap there were two British and four British drivers in the first five. Moss was leading on the Vanwall, in front of Collins (Ferrari), Fangio (Maserati), Brooks (Vanwall) and Hawthorn (Ferrari). On the fourth lap, Moss came down to the harbour too fast, and crashed head-on into the barrier at the chicane. Collins just avoided the Vanwall, only to crash into the barrier on the harbour's edge at the exact spot where he had crashed another car in the practice the previous day.

A pole from the demolished barricades falls across the track. Brooks breaks, and Hawthorn, taken by surprise, tears a front wheel off his Ferrari against the back of the Vanwall. The wheel complete with brake flew into the harbour, while the car crashed on top of Collins's machine. Fangio went through unscathed, and Brooks continued in second place.

After the fourth lap, the result was a forgone conclusion, and Fangio circulated regularly past the wrecked cars of his young rivals. This time there had been no one to be fished out of the harbour, but the frogmen on the rescue boats kept up their vigil until the end of the race.

The Super Fast coupe on the Super America chassis, with 335 B.H.P. V-12 engine of 4,960 c.c. The simple, uncluttered line suggests speed, even when stationary.

Next to Fangio, Luigi Musso on a Ferrari made the best impression. He challenged the World Champion, and managed to get within 15" of him, setting up a new lap record at 102.76 m.p.h. But he spun at the Nouveau-Monde corner, losing 12", and continued more circumspectly, to finish second, 51" behind the winner.

Black face light goggles, light face, black goggles. Mike Hawthorn (Ferrari) tailing the American driver MacKay Frazer (BRM) who was to be killed at Reims a week later. Hawthorn finished 4th; Frazer retired, but on the strength of this drive he was immediately given a contract with BRM, which he did not live to fulfill.

On the first lap at the South Curve Hawthorn and Collins (Ferrari) are followed closely by Fangio and Behra (Maseratis), Moss (Vanwall), Musso (Ferrari), Schell (Maserati) and Lewis-Evans (Vanwall). Farther behind are Gregory (Maserati), Brooks (Vanwall), Salvadori (Cooper) and Herrmann's white Maserati.
