I believe we are currently in the era of 'more is more' as opposed to 'less is more'
Overly complicated design is the current trend with just about everyone, except maybe Mercedes which appear to be trying to simplify their design vocabulary

Agree! Complexity seems to be the new norm. In the old days, differentiating features such as vents, accents, scoops, stripes, etc. would be added, subtracted, or moved to different locations on the car each successive model year on a series. Some years were obviously more attractive than others and the car did not necessarily get better looking as the model years progressed. Now, it seems that all the differentiating features are applied at once to a car instead being saved for future make-overs. Just my take.

The last several yrs have been very quiet from GM Design.
I am amazed at how large the BMW Studio space is. It's gigantic.

as this is the "design" forum, can I ask if anyone out there actually likes the new format?
I imagine there are technical reasons for the new look, but I find it a real pain to read!

    - now where did I leave that old format....?

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and change the forum skin to "FerrariChat - Old". This is how I browse the new site and, while it isn't exactly the same, it feels comfortably familiar. :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

OK, I'll admit I'm having a difficult time accepting. I really wanted to embrace the change for a more modern interface, but I find the new format more difficult to read with the grey on white graphics. It's a problem of aging i guess , but my eyes ain't as good as they used to be so I find myself struggling to read the smaller print. The layout is cleaner & fresher looking, no doubt. The 'old' format wasn't the most contemporary looking UI, but it was legible. I'm forcing myself to get used to the new format..............no matter what! Change can be good as it keeps me on my toes. ;)

When I was in the Pontiac Design Studio the Interior guys were enamored with red instrument panel graphics/lighting like BMW uses. However, studies were run and we found mature males have a difficult time reading red print versus black/blue etc. Maybe that's part of my problem.

Given the presence of the black strake forward of the front wheel, at a quick first glance, one first gets the impression that the grill opening seems to be the widest part of the car before taking everything else in.

They 'borrowed' Kia's grille graphics for the side glass

maybe I'm being a bit too pedantic, but I thought the point of a forum was to exchange views, and it seems to me that is best accomplished by making those view as easy to read as possible.
not sure I understand how making it more difficult is an upgrade...

And they did a windshield that has wrap around instead of having an A pillar that is virtually the same angle as the glass.

Need to see some more views but from this angle this is interesting, and as John pointed out, cohesive. They knew when to lift the pencil.

    Let me be clear.....
THE NEW DESIGN IS NOT BETTER FROM A USER STANDPOINT. THERE CAN BE NO ARGUMENT ON THIS POINT.
I have 35 years of successful professional design experience in graphic design and marketing to back that up.

Having made that clear, remember that "new designs sell [insert your product/service here]".
Especially mindful to you guys in/from the car design biz.....
After all, who else has been responsible for more bad design over the years!
(the stuff being shown at Frankfurt above for example......)
(OK, and right alongside us marketing/branding guys.....;-)
Like jm2, I'm forcing myself to use the new layout format, not because I like it better, but because as a designer I need to always be open to new stuff. And if I chicken out, there is always (maybe...) the old skin to crawl back into....
