Bobileff Motorcar Company in San Diego has been commissioned to restore the body on this Lambo 400 2+2 ,chassis # 0892 back to it’s original state. In the next few updates, the process will take you thru removing the nose, building the steel nose, welding the nose on, then starting with the tail, removing it, building an exact duplicate, and installing it. The car has been purchased by a group in England, and the car has been sent here to fabricate the metal work back to it’s original vision and glory.

Wow. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the car's new owners and to everyone at your company, Gary, for ridding the world of this unfortunate exercise in bad taste. I, for one, will watch this thread with interest.

    Hi all,

    A brief intro…..

I purchased #0892 from Peter Kumar of Gullwing last summer, but it was actually discovered in La Habre, by the guys at Chequered Flag in California.

I am a Private enthusiast based in the UK and have been after a 400gt for some time.

At first sight 0892 looked to be a bit of a horror story but after flying to New York with my bodywork and mechanical guys (Scott and Matt) we were shocked to realise the car was in unbelievably solid and original condition...... Apart from the obvious!!!

The car started well considering but with no clutch it was not a driver.

The first sign that the car was in great shape was the near perfect condition of the original pigskin interior.

After working out a deal with Peter Kumar (great guy!) It quickly became obvious that the car could only go to one place to have the body brought back to original factory build.

The call was made to Gary Bobileff who agreed to take the project on, and the car was shipped to San Diego in mid October.

    The story continues with Gary.....................

    Hi,

As a matter of interest, do you know who did this redesign of the front end, and when?

I know most will not like this question, but has it been considered to leave it just as it is (aside technical restoration)? Because this redesign is part of this particular cars history? And, it makes it a one-of additionally ...

    Cheers, Bernhard

P.S.: I do not think that this redesign is all too weird. If compared e.g. with the Raymond Loewy Lancia, which is acknowledged as a respected design ...

We must homogenize! I have some shared feelings about this Bernhard. It's been discussed before over on VLG. It's not particularly my cup of tea ,but it is interesting and looks well carried out. Perhaps Gary would comment on that part? Having yet another 400GT is at this point nothing all that special by comparison but it's always ths the owner's choice to make.

I doubt anyone is going to scream bloody murder at this point in time as I don't believe it was something carried out with the factory's cooperation? So in that sense it is not historically accurate.

I've seen some one off Ferraris at Concorso Italiano that make this look like a masterpiece.

At least it's not the Stuarti!

I would be interested to hear the story behind the conversion as well; who rebodied this car and when?

Well, "ugly", lets say different than a bunch of Barbies, all looking just like each other? Rather "interesting" at least, perhaps? ...

    Sorry, I could not resist .... ;) ;) ;)

Well I don't know that she is Italian but she married one! ;)

Kind of looks like way too heavy false eyelashes were applied but the front says Ferrari to me?

So other than the design were the modifications well constructed?

The metal work was nicely done, but the front grille was poorly constructed. All the added on panels and sheet metal were brazed , not welded on.

Would you consider selling the cut-off front, and if so, for what price? ;)

Seriously, this would make a nice display item, together with photos of the car as found ...

    Cheers, Bernhard

P.S.: I just find myself thinking of entertaining disputes with the German customs about the real value thereof ... :D.

    Looks like TIG welding?

I love watching skilled metal work!

    How was the template made?

    Cheers, Bernhard
