and I think in '64 the military was still doing their "Safety Tests" north of Groom Lake. Thanks for posting this Bob.
can you identify the cars in the 64 picture? Looks like the southbound is a 59 Caddy! The yellow northbound I think is a Ford Fairlane (or Falcon?) and just beyond that the white car I think is a 57 Ford.
Nice Imperial- Check out the guy fitting the side curtains to his Sprite! Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's not a Sprite. It's a Triumph. Cool you noticed it though. While in Vegas this past week I see they lit up the Riviera Neon sign for the filming of the newest Jason Bourne movie (filming currently in LV). Pretty cool. The Riviera will be imploded this summer.
Diamonds Are Forever captures Vegas as I first knew it. I used to stay at "The White House" (Hilton) a lot. Bet football at the Silver Slipper, gambled at the Dunes. Don the Beachcomber at the Sahara. The pool and the buffet at the Tropicana. The Lido de Paris at the Stardust with Sigfried and Roy. Learned how to shoot craps at the Horseshoe downtown and the Barbary Coast. Finish with $1.99 steak and eggs. Ah, those were the days.
Probably dirt cheap. Even in the 1980's, the real estate was fairly reasonable in the area. The Hughes Company sold off large chunks of raw land and their casino's in the 80's. I know someone who bought a big chunk of raw land on the strip in the 80's from them.
This topic is my wheelhouse as they say. I have a twitter account called @classiclasvegas that touches on a lot of this stuff. Here is just a small sample of some recent ones I've done. Of course there are a lot of stories of why things changed, but visually alone the comparison photos say a lot. I love these...thanks. Looking at the Gucci photo in Caesars....would be fun to see a picture of Cleopatra's Barge from 1982 and today....identical!
That's the main reason I did that comparison shot, I of course remember that too. When I tweeted that out, immediately I got somebody tell me how happy they were the environment was in better shape now.

Las Vegas recycles more water then any other city on earth. But unfortunately gushing water falls are now politically incorrect even if it makes no difference.
