Any one know anything about this event. Other than the IMSA races in the early 90's I didn't know that any races were ever held in New Orleans.

I think this is the event that was run on the old runways at Alvin Calender Airfield. Way back in the day they ran a Grand Prix race there for like one or two years.

I Googled Lewis Strang and Harry Endicott.

Lewis Strang (1887 Atlanta, Georgia – 20 July 1911 Blue River, Wisconsin) was an American racecar driver. Strang was pole sitter for the inaugural "500". He was killed in a testing accident, becoming the first Indy 500 veteran to die.

Harry Endicott (1883 Montgomery, Indiana – 5 September 1913 Jackson, Michigan) was an American racecar driver. He was the brother of fellow "500" participant Bill Endicott. Endicott was killed in a dirt oval practice crash.

I don't know if the airfield was there in 1911. Could there have been a race at the Fairgrounds? It looks like it was a mile track.

Yeah, Gerard, I think you are right. If I'm not mistaken, Alvin Callender Field came to be around 1940 or 1941.

With IndyCar coming to NOLA next year, I thought I would give this thread a bump. The race a NOLA is not the first. The Fairgrounds hosted auto races before the Indy 500!

The Governor held a press confrence earlier in the month and officials from IndyCar and Andretti Autosport were there. There is a House Bill that has to be passed in Baton Rouge for the funding to improve the track. That would be the only hang up, so I would say it is a good bet that there will be an IndyCar race at NOLA.
It is not yet on the schedule but that won't come out until latter this year.
