This Tipo A6G-2000 (s/n 2150) was carefully restored to former competition glory under my supervision over a period of almost three years! Last week it was featured in the German magazine AUTO ZEITUNG (photo-copyright: Walter Bäumer, 2007). The engine was done in Germany and was on the dyno at AMG in Affalterbach, Stuttgart. Their dyno-report confirmed that the car has now almost 30 hp more (after sorting out the mistakes Maserati made in the technical design of the chain-driven A6G-engines!): 195 hp at 850 kg weight! Not bad for a 50ies car!
A 2nd car is currently under work.......!

    Ciao!

For pro photographer you are terrible at placing pictures in this thread Walter. I see nothing except "x". ;>)
I would love to see it though.

Do you have to be a subscriber to post photos? A hyperlink to the photos would probably work too.

You should also post the improvements that were made to squeeze 195 hp out of the car. I suppose the twin spark ignition helps. :)

I have posted pictures and I'm not "subscribed". In fact I saw it done today by someone that's brand new.
Maybe he's reached his storage limit?

    Johnei,
no, the ignition was not the issue! Maserati made some major mistake on the crank and the bearings. Most Italian workshop today do the overhaul in standart aka "old-fashioned" way without a serious dyno-test. This will work only for 2 or 3 years and then problems are back again.
There is a specialist in Germany for this kind of engines and his work is ABSOLUTLEY FANTASTIC! He solved the problem by making a new crank and bearings and some other improvements. Also he avoid many -but not all- tolerances. The engine was dyno-tested at AMG (Mercedes Benz-Tuner) over 5 days incl. very sensible run-in. The motor sounds now very different and more like a real race car. Also we improved the position of the differential. This is a major problem in standart position as it bounces (its a rigid axle) left to right. Finally a strenghened clutch came into the car. We tested this wonderful Maserati last summer 2 days on the modern Nuerburgring and the car was absolutley reliable. This photos (hope you all see them now!) where taken by me on the "backyards" of the circuit. Last week the owner denied an offer of 1.1 Million Euros! Good decision...!

    Ciao!
    Walter

...this is the man who made 195 hp possible! Behind #2150 you see its sister-car #2148. The photo was taken April last year when the resto was finished and we had the first run with it.

The other photo shows boths cars side by side. (for all photos - COPYRIGHT: Walter Bäumer, 2007)

Thank you for the pictures and the additional information about the motor. Regarding the ignition, I was just remembering the restoration of a single plug, single cam A6G. I doubt it would have been capable of producing the same amount of power. Still I'll keep it in mind for future reference.

I'm pretty sure I've spoken with you about this car before. It is the Vignale bodied showcar s/n 2031. Not much of a racecar although I think it was run in the TdF.

Walter, there was an article in an English classic car magazine about a Maserati 5000GT that was restored in Germany not long ago. The restorer said that Maserati never could figure out how to design a 90* V8 crankshaft and that the model was always plagued by balancing issues. Strangly enough, the article said that the counterweights were not part of the forging but were welded on. In the restoration the crank was now a new custom one.

Was this the same restorer who did these cars you've shown? If you have some more specific details on the changes made to the crankshaft and bearings, I would like to hear them. Thanks.

JCR, no - the restorer of the black 5000 GT was not the specialist who made the A6G-2000 motor. I am not a mechanic but it needs major improvements to get the 5000 GT V8- and the straight-6 from the A6G-2000 reliable. But also the work that was done on the 5000 GT-engine is excellent!

    Ciao!
