....I've read about, been told about, and heard stories of the "scrap heap" of cars that used to be behind the Maserati factory. I believe while under De Tamaso ownership most or all of what was there was sold.

I was told during the early 60's to the very early 70's there were many, many cars both street and competition stacked on top of each other. There was a 250F chassis, the tail section of a 250F, the Touring Prototipo "White Lady" AM101.001, an A6G, a few 200S bodies and chassis, a 300S chassis, 450S #4507 that was on fire???,..many, many bodies and wrecked race cars which were picked for thier parts and left. ---- Is any of this true??? ---

Can anyone else tell a personal story of seeing or getting any cars/parts from the scrap heap? Frank M,....care to add any photos or stories? Herr Baumer, have any photos/stories? We'd love to see some!!!!

    Ciao and best!

It is true. I saw it with my own eyes. Don't forget the Eldorado and the A6GCS Pininfarina Coupe were there as well.

The Touring Prototipo "White Lady" aka Dama Bianca AM101.001 is now owned by Adolfo Orsi grandson of namesake, it is stored in a rural warehouse near Modena, he showed it to me a few years ago, needs full restoration.

When I visited Peter Kaus in 1996 for an article on the Tipo 151's he explained that Joe Finn carted away truckloads of old parts and more when de Tomaso ordered the big "spring clearing."

    best regards,

    Marc

    Hi all,
According to an article in the march/1963 Road and Track, the Costin-Maserti coupe was found by an American, Byron Staver, "languishing ignominiously on the scrap heap".
This car has always been one of my favorite Maserati's Regards, Ian

    Ian,
and here is your favorite car as it was found by Byron Stayer. In the background you see an A6GCS Pininfarina coupe and some chassis.

Thank you Walter for posting that photo! Very cool for us youger guys who were not lucky enough to be around then!

I was told that 450S # 4507 was on the pile at one time. I'm not claming it was,...I was TOLD that it was there. The same Sig. said there were two 300S chassis on the factory heap, either waiting to be repaired or,.....?

    Thanks again!

For sure there was one of the three 350S on the "scrapyard" in the early 60s. This car (#3503) was sold to American car nut Tom Meade. He paid $420 for it....!

We have to understand that GILCO produced the 300S-chassis for Maserati on demand and its very unlikely that Maserati -who was always short of cash!- had ordered chassis for race cars in advance.

But fact is, that the original 16-cyl.-engine that was used for the world-speed-record by Borzacchini in 1929, was ordered to be scrapped by the man who is much honored by a lot of people as "The Man who saved Maserati" - Alessandro DeTomaso!

Hallo, I just saw my name mentioned in this thread.
I visited what I recall was an Orsi warehouse in Modena in ca1977. I only took a few photos, and attach some of them here. Apart from the engine blocks and cylinder heads etc, there was also a pile of riveted petrol tanks. The whole lot could be bought at the time, but I just didn't have the money!
Just outside in open air was indeed the 101.001 prototype and a few other cars, already in pretty bad shape.
    Those were indeed different times........
    Regards,
    Dan

    Dan,
thanks for posting this very interesting photos.
But: was this "Orsi warehouse" within the Maserati premises that was owned by DeTomaso at that time or was it a different location outside the FActory?

Also - do you have more photos around which -probably- confirm the race car remains?

    Hallo Walter,

I visited the factory a few times to buy spares for the 3500 I had then, and to see the factory of course, usually talking also to Cozza. I am pretty sure that a younger employee took us in his car to see the Orsi spares, that they were no longer within the factory compound. I did not see any race car chassis at this location. If you send me a pm with your e-mail adress I could send you the other photos I have in a higher res.

    Best regards,
    Dan

I visited this warehouse owned by the Orsi family back in 1979/80. It was located in the industrial area just on the other side of the tangenziali about 1 or 2 KLM at most from the factory.
The white lady was there as were a lot of old race car parts. At the time Roberto Orsi Adolfo's brother took me there to look at some OEM exhaust system parts he wanted to sell me. Old issues of VCM show photos taken at the time.
    Ciao,

Dan, thanks for posting the photos. It's interesting to see 101.001 still with her unique window trim that runs into the rear qtr spears. It still had the original tail lights and unique rear bumper at that time.

I wonder how she's doing today?

    Walter,
Are you sure the restoration is finished? When I saw the car in Sept the sheet metal work was just beginning. It needed a lot of work. My guess is that it would need to be rebodied.

Are there any photos of the craftsmanship of the current restoration of 101.001? It would be a real treat to see her.
