Maserati - Borrani Wire Wheels

    I have an early Maserati Mistral Coupe AM 109 056 (1964) 3700 cc Lucas FI - and would like to know the correct Borrani Wire Wheel RW number for this car. Ermanno Cozza lists the wire wheel as 600 x 16" - attack 42 - hub three eared but not the Borrani RW number.
    Borrani website for the Mistral only lists the (later) 15" wire wheel as '6.50 x 15" RW 3994 42RC 72 record'. There are a number of 16" Borrani wire wheels listed for the 3500 GT, GTi and the Sebring 1 - which one is correct for this early Mistral. This car has the three eared knock-offs; and the correct splined hubs; but an aftermarket wire wheel and I want to replace them with the correct ones from Borrani.
    Also can anyone winkle out the 'attack 42' - presume it stands for attachment or hub - 42 mm being the correct diameter.

    Collin, for the 16" borrani for your car the is the RW 3872. This wheel is for the GTIS or Sebring II. I have seen them on 2 original Mistrals, although I believe most Mistrals; 90% were fitted with 15" RW 3994. The 3707 for 3500 GT and GTIS early, should fit, but not be 100% "correct".

    I have two complete sets (5)/(10) of RW 3872 if you are interested send me a PM.

    Sorry, I didn't reply sooner, but was away on a vacation...

    I to own a 1964 Mistral (109-102) with 3.7L engine and
    Borrani wires (3 eared)... Here is what I have:

    Wheels: 16 x 6L RW 3823
    Tires: 185SR16 Tubed

    Hello Colin,

    i own also a 1964 Mistral.... the 16 x 6L RW 3872 Rekord Borrani are correct.
    Mine sit for the last 35 Years in a Barn with the Wheels on.
    I bought it untouched from the second Owner.

    if you wish to have a bigger Picture of the Wheel just ask.

    It is strange that a 1964 Mistral would have a knock offs without ears. This type of knock offs were normally used starting in 1968 when USA regulations prohibited the eared knock offs. I wonder if these were changed early in the car's life.

    RW is it's own size

    Here are some specs to better understand

    42 62.5 mm hub dia 75 splines
    52 73 mm hub dia 88 splines

    The RW call out has sizes ranging from 5 - 120 which include the common 35 42 52 sizes.

    Thanks to everybody for your input - much appreciated.
    The correct Borrani number for the early Mistral 16" wheels is - 16" x 6 L RW 3872 Record with tires 185HR16 (or 185VR16). These size of tires are available through Universal Tire or Coker Tire by three manufacturers (Vredestein ($292-HR); Avon ($393-VR); or Firestone ($248-HR) - or if you wan't period piece correctness from Pirelli (Cinturato) - but they cost a lot more.
    Wasn't too sure about the reply listing the number of spokes - it doesn't seem to show up in the Borrani number or am I missing something?
    Another point of interest - as far as I understand it the "RW" stands for "Rudge-Whitworth" whom Borrani bought out or took over their wire wheel patent or manufacturing business - so the originator of the 'Borrani' wire wheels was Rudge-Whitworth.
    Anyone know what the "Record" (or "Rekord") stands for?

    I have the Vredestein 185 HR 16 on my 3500 GT and I am very happy with them.
    IMHO they seem to be better than the Pirellis.

    Agreed - the Vredesteins are a good tire. I have them on my 1967 A/R Duetto (14" size). I have the Firestones on my 1962 3500 GTi and have also found them to be excellent as well.
