Dear Ghibli Enthusiasts, I am just restoring Ghibli #2166 (see 2 pics showing the present state of work) and have to decide the new colour now. I never thought that this will become a problem but now it is. So many nice colours seen in the Ghibli threads of this wonderful forum does not make it easier. The original factory configuration was Argento Auteuil Metallic with black interior. When I bought the car in 2008 it was anthracite metallic (see the other two pics), probably no original Maserati colour but quite nice in my opinion. I don' t like the original bright silver, prefer dark colours for the Ghibli instead. Any suggestions from your side - with name, code number and photo, if possible - would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance for your valued advice. Thomas Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thomas, well, a very difficult question. I personally like blue Ghiblis - but there are too many of them now. What about black? Not the ordinary black - but perhaps a mix of 60% black and 40% brown? Or the clear opposite - a creme-white? Very rare and very special? But - everything you decide has at first match YOUR taste! Ciao! Walter
Tabacco Metalizzato 20m411 My friend bought this from Ivan a few years ago. Great color Ciao, Charles Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think Ghibilis are getting to the "its the original colour price range" and I think Walter will agree. If not Have a look at this picture. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140548&page=27 Regards Graeme
Well, I normally agree to that statement. But if someone wants to re-paint -for example!- a red Ghibli I would not disagree.... Ciao! Walter
One of the most stunning Ghiblis I ever restored was #1220, shown here. We painted it a very rich multi clear coated black, with red leather and grey carpets. The thing that set it off was the addition of 42mm 3 ear K/O wire wheels. This was one of those cars I wish I still had and would consider buying back if the opurtunity presented itself. The car ran like stink and looked spectacular! The cold air box was not very good looking but the rest of the car was soooo sweet. After every 100 mile test drive i would put the car back in the shop on white paper to check for fluid leaks in the AM. Not one drop from this car. The quality of the work coming out of our shop during that period was first rate. Check out the quality of the details in the photos. This was a parts car when I bought it. Some of you will recognize the road as the back of the old MIE Shop. The greenish blue building down the road is still owned by Janet and I today. We sold the Bertone 3500 GT to buy that building in 1990. I love the tire marks on the road. I am not a black car fan but that does look good. Here is another interetsing Colour combination. http://www.classicdriver.com/uk/find/4100_results.asp?lCarID=1836459 Rgds Graeme
Thank you very much for your interesting suggestions so far. When Maserati introduced the new Quattroporte, I think it was in 2003, the official pics showed the car in a light metallic green. I can imagine that this colour will suit also the Ghibli, especially with black interior. Does anybody know the name and/or code of this colour? In the meantime I discovered the name of this Quattroporte' s colour: Verde Acquamarina. The color code is 908266. It can also be found at Fiat and Lancia models of the late 90s. While looking for samples of original Ghibli colours, I found the attached photo of an original Iso colour sample kit. I inserted numbers in order to make it easier to assign names and codes. Hopefully the original publisher Michael Gulett doesn' t mind. Here is the link to his article: http://**********.com/2011/05/iso-color-samples.html and here are the related names and Glidden Salchi codes: 1) Bianco Polo Park 20 W 152 2) Gallo Limone 20 Y 420 3) Bleu Rivolta 20 A 357 4) Rosso Aurora 20 R 421 5) Rosso Fuoco 20 R 306 6) Rosso Alfa 20 R 133 7) Nero 20 B 50 8 Argento Auteuil Metallizzato 106 E 1 9) Volpe Argentata Metallizzato 106 E 44 10) Luci Di Mezzanotte Metallizzato 106 E 47 11) Beige Metallizzato 106 E 52 12) Oro Antico Metallizzato 106 Y 60 13) Beige Metallizzato 106 Y 56 14) Verde Gemma Metallizzato 106 G 53 15) Verde Acqua Metallizzato 106 G 21 16) Verde Medio Metallizzato 106 G 29 17) Verde Aintree Metallizzato 106 G 81 18) Azzurro Metallizzato 106 A 32 19) Blu Metallizzato 106 A 51 20) Bleu Sera Metallizzato 106 A 18 21) Rame Metallizzato 106 R 49 22) Oro Andalusia Metallizzato 106 Y 13 23) Rosso Rubino Metallizzato 106 R 83 24) Rosso Cordoba Metallizzato 106 R 7 Several of these colours can be found in Mr. Cozza' s list, published by Ivan Ruiz at http://www.thecarnut.com/Manuals/Paint/Maserati_GT_factory_paint_codes.pdf Thomas Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Golden eagle, have you chosen your colour yet?? The quattroporte colour looks to my (old) eyes similar to 16 on the colourwheel. Very classy. Does anyone have any pictures of cars in grigio Milano or grigio Newmarket from Sig. Cozza's colour chart? Just wondering if they were light or dark. Was grigio flemington also an original Ghibli colour as it's not on that list? FWIW I think Tobacco looks fantastic too! Best regards. Mark
Hello, Any one have a photo of a car painted in 10) Luci Di Mezzanotte Metallizzato 106 E 47. My old QP1 was supposed to be in that colour originally, but the paint sample does not show up on my monitor in the colour that I expected. A photo of any car would do. Thanks. Regards Ian
To answer Mark' s question: No, I have not yet taken my final decision but I am one step further. The colour will most probably become a dark grey or a light green, similar to the colour of the Quattroporte above. I don' t have photos of "Grigio Milano" nor do I have one with the original "Luci di Mezzanotte". The latter was originally a rather dark shade of grey, almost black, as can be seen in the Iso colour sample kit above (No. 10) - not to be mistaken with "Blu Luci di Mezzanotte", a dark blue colour, used by Maserati decades later. What I do have and will attach are pics of Lancias painted with "Grigio Newmarket" (sources: http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/other-italian-cars/171401-lancia-flamina-color-2.html and http://www.autobelle.it/annunci/dettid.php?gb_id=72962) and - thanks to Ivan Ruiz excellent website - a Ghibli painted in "Grigio Flemington" (source: http://www.thecarnut.com/ghibli67grey.html) Thomas Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for posting the photos Thomas. Let us know what the final decision is. I'm sure it will look lovely as only the Ghibli can..... Mark
Now we are at the final elimination stage. The car is ready for painting. Decision will be made beginning of next week. We have prepared sample sheets of the two possible colours left: "Volpe Argentata" (see attached pics of a Quattroporte A) and "Grigio Newmarket" (see attached pics of a 3500 GT). Both are period correct colours, originally available for the Ghibli. Any preferences from your side? Hi Thomas. By spooky coincidence I stumbled upon the new colour wheel samples on 'the carnut' website this afternoon before you posted. (Thanks Ivan, it really is a treasure trove of useful stuff!) I thought then that the Volpe Argentata sample would look great on a Ghibli. It seems to have a subtlety and a bit more sophistication than 'light silver-grey'. So for my tuppence worth, one vote for Volpe Argentata! Please post some pictures post spraying, whatever the choice. All the best. Mark.
Thank you for the correction, Walter. Sorry for that mistake with the Quattroporte. You are the expert, I am new to the Maserati universe - still a beginner and still learning, mostly by doing. Any comment from your side regarding the two proposed colours would be appreciated, too. Thomas
Thomas, the "A"-version of the QP I was with De Dion-rear axle The "B"-version came with the standart specification. Ciao! Walter
A friend provide me with scanned copies of original Maserati color samples, which I have posted on my website. Since the samples were scanned they should not be used to color match paint but they do provide a good approximation. You can download the color samples from this link: http://thecarnut.com/Manuals/Paint/Paint-chips.pdf Ivan
Thank you Ivan for this valuable information. But, could it be that you scanned two times the same back sides? Page 2 an 4 of this pdf seem to be identical ... Thomas
This is my newly purchased QP1 serie A in Grigio Milano. It's a really nice color Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Walter, I am under the possibly mistaken impression that the QP1 with the live axle was referred to as "2a". Can you please clear this up for me. Many thanks, regards Ian
