Hi I thought that I would pass on this picture. It was just sent to me by a friend that is visiting New Zealand. It is at the Southward Museum. I don't have any other information on the car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Both cars were sold without any international race entries to New Zealand. It might be possibe that the cars were raced there in some non-important venues. Most impressive on the 8CLT/50 is the 16-pipe-manifold!
Gabriel Many thanks for posting the photo of the exhaust manifold. Very impressive! I wonder if the manifold is original or a re-creation. The welding looks a little rough. Aloha Larry
The manifold is not the original one anymore - but correctly replicated, confimed by period photo(s) of that part.
I wonder if there is any Maserati activity in NZ, as I hope to visit there next winter. I understand there is a replica A6GCS PF Coupe there? I'm hoping to view some cars, and perhaps a local Club function if the timing allows? Thanks, RF.
Here are race reports for two Grand Prix races in New Zealand - I think that some of the photos in the first link show it was at best a mid field runner. http://www.sergent.com.au/motor/1956.html http://www.sergent.com.au/motor/1958.html
I am sorry that I missed your post when I replied to the 8CLT question. It may take a few days but I will make a few inquiries and get back to you. In the meantime have a look at this site www.autorestorations.co.nz - they have restored many cars and should be able to help with the replica A6GCS PF Coupe.
I can give you some more information on the 8CLT.In the 1958 NZGP results you will see that Pat Hoare came 4th in a Ferrari 625. He was an uncle of mine and he died in 1971 when I was about 15 and nobody in the family could tell a lot. But David Manton wrote a book called Enzo Ferrari's Secret War which has a few chapters about Pat Hoare. The story goes like this. Pat sold the Ferrari 625 to Frank Shuter (Pat was a wheeler dealer in cars) and in his 3rd race at Wigram in 1961 he crashed it and wrote it off. But he had not paid for the car and so a deal came about that Pat took delivery of 2 Maserati 8CLT and 8CM plus a couple of road cars which he on sold. A Fred Zambucka brought the two 8CLT Maseratis to New Zealand in the first place and sold them to Frank Shuter. Originally built for the 1950 Indianapolis 500 but never got there.
Hi there Red Fred. If you are coming into New Zealand via Auckland, I'd be happy to show you a toy or two. The Pinninfarina A6GCS reproduction is also an Auckland car which is housed with a few other eye watering Masers, which I could request a visit to view. Let me know when you are planning to come. [email protected] In the South Island, Auto Restorations are well worth a 'drop in' as is Rod Tempero's workshop in Oamaru (3hrs drive south of Christchurch on the 1 H'way). The 8CLT in the Southward museum (an hour north of Wellington on the 1 H'way) is a magnificent piece of engineering and restoration, alongside a myriad (100s) of wonderful cars and machinery.
