A very beautiful and rare Maserati is being offered by Gooding and Co., Scottsdale, January 18th and 19th. The A6GS/300S/150 GT, little known and wonderful car. Made before the 3500 GT, could this have been the next "production" Maserati? Who penned the car? Could some of the F-Chat Maserati experts comment on the history of the car?????? This is car is all the business! Ciao and best! ~Trev http://go.bloomberg.com/pursuits/2012/10/11/rare-maserati-heads-to-auction/ Image Unavailable, Please Login
From the one photo it looks gorgeous and the color is superb as well. I think I'm gonna bid on this one ... Hmmm, it's RHD?
http://www.goodingco.com/ Check some of the prices. These guys seem to know how to sell "foreign cars".
I have one source listing it a a Frua bodied coupe. Also Simon K. had the car on offer awhile ago. I'd like to know the original carrozzeria from original build to present. ~Trev Image Unavailable, Please Login
For this coveted 1957 Maserati 150 GT, a one-of-a-kind prototype, the trident emblem on its grill represents more than just automotive branding. It also symbolizes the cars three lives. After its owner, a European collector, purchased the two-seat convertible in 2006, he found that the chassis described in the cars documentation didnt match its actual chassis. Detective work with a Maserati historian revealed that the car originated in 1953 as a 2-liter A6 GCS, a decorated race car that was then overhauled into a 3-liter 300S prototype the following year. Even more modifications followed in 1957, when the car became its current self, complete with a new lightweight-alloy body by famed Italian workshop Carrozzeria Fantuzzi. No additional models were made, however, with Maserati opting instead for the mass-volume 3500 GT. Gooding & Co. will auction the 150 GT in Scottsdale, Arizona, in January and expects the little rocketa title bestowed by the owner because of its incredible power-to-weight ratioto fetch more than $3 million. Good things always come in threes, after all
Sorry, but I have to correct you here - the coachwork comes from Pietro Frua! We`ll see if the car makes $$ 3.0m... The mechanical rstoration was done by Steve Hart in the UK who found the front-part of the chassis as very similar to 300S specs. The car is a collection of parts made by Maserati as a typical one-off. Tanner tested the car in the late 50s and was rather dissapointed! However - the car is very original and genuine.
Chassis, body, engine, gearbox! Its an original car, completed by Maserati on Oct. 31, 1956. Hans Tanner tested the car in 1960 and complained many details in quality and handling. It was totally under-developed. The circumstances WHY Maserati had the idea to produce this car, using all this "hotch-potch" of parts etc, is unclear. But - it has a continuous history. INHO I can`t see the $3.0m for it. But we we`ll see.... This photo shows it in the race department of Maserati next to the A6G 2000 Zagato #2102. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Without a doubt one of my all-time favorite cars, too look at. I don't think I'd want to drive it much.
They are, however, correct. They disappeared when the car was restored and repainted (red) in the 1980s. Nice to see that the car is now back to original specs.
I absolutely agree - the design is very Frua-esque . The description of the car should definitely include the designer, not just Fantuzzi as the bodymaker. I also think Maserati called the car 1500 Gran Turismo, not 150 GT as it is now known.
I can't tell, are they supposed to be lips or a moustache? I don't mind them and since they are original they stay. That's assuming I win of course ... LOL
I test-drove this car more than a decade ago when it was owned by a German and serviced by Manny Rimböck near Munich. Terrible to drive since it didn´t offer any comforts like the cabriolet it is should and was far too heavy for a performance car. And I have owned and driven a 150S (#1659) which is a quick and agile little sports racing car Interesting as an artefact and IMHO should be worth much less than a 150S. I will eat my hat if this car makes 3.0 million USD. Regards Wolfi
