BURN THEM!!! Grab yer' pitchforks and torches and bring them TO THE STAKE!!! It's a biturbo hunt! With a little friendly sarcasm
My best friend got one when they were new. After 6 months it needed repair and the part was on back order. They gave him a loaner and told him they would call when the part was in and the car was done. Ten months went by and he finally gets a call that it was done. When he goes to pick up the hunk of junk he hands the keys of the loaner to the service manager, who in turn asks him what's this. When my friend tells him its the key to the loaner the manager busts out laughing. Says they reported it stolen about 6 months ago because they had no idea what happened to it.
Thats one of the VERY BEST stories I have ever heard about this Biturbo-something!!! REALLY! Luuuuve that!
Great story! I worked as a valet in the 80's, drove a few of these - I'm not a hater though (but never an owner, which may have swayed me!!!).
ROTFLMAO, yeah sure Just merge the two threads already. BTW, Maserati is currently building Biturbos once again. Rather ironic.
The Biturbos had presence as well Walter, maybe not for you but let's face it we are pretty jaded lot what with all the fabulous cars we see on a regular basis. You're even more focused on the earlier days of Maserati a company which is long gone, way before DeTomaso arrived. No one would dispute how much better the current crop of cars is and they better be. But it still get lots of compliments on my 84 but on a concours field it does look a little plain. So dies a 308 and that's a very lovely looking car one of the prettiest ever but it's lost in the crowd these days. My 84 has been photographed featured several times by Conceptcarz and the Maserati hired photographer as well. So it must be at least better than chopped liver ... Your avatar is still busted ...
Actually the loaner was a VW. Every time he or I tell this story we bust out laughing. The crazy thing is he will still defend that car. He says when it was running right it was fun to drive. By my calculations that was 6 days of the 2 years he owned it lol.
Neither was the Pantera or much now vaunted Mangusta so ... DeTomaso cars that landed on these shores typically required much debugging and finishing by the customer. There's no arguing that point. Yet people fix those cars and moved on. Sorry but if you have not owned one and sorted it properly then you're not qualified to comment. But don't feel badly most did not.
It's all relative, but I agree with you. Heck the E-Type wasn't thought of being a "quality" car, but I own one, and it's been a ROCK. From a purely aesthetic point of view, I'm not sure how you can't love this: Image Unavailable, Please Login
The reason that Walter does not like the DeTomaso era cars is that he got short-changed on his Merak. He really wanted the Citroen equipped model, with the roundish dash board, the single spoke steering wheel, and of course all the green fluid. He got one of the lesser quality post DeTomaso Meraks and he just can't get over his feelings of loss about it.
Well let's not get carried away here, I think it's a handsome reworked design of the Biturbo body shell by Gandini but visually it's not in the same league as a nice E-type. If you're not doing anything Sunday there's an annual wine tasting event in NJ at: The Stables at Waterwheel Farm, LLC It's a benefit for the Karen Ann Quinlan foundation - hospice It's a beautiful spot and if you bring a vintage car like your Jag then entrance is complimentary. I had my Espada there a couple of times but the seats are out of that for some repairs so I think we'll be bringing the 84 Biturbo or our Jag. Maybe Carmine can come as well? The rest of you can always fly in and throw stones ... We can arrange accommodations for you at the hospice LOL Sunday, September 8, 2013 (Rain date: September 15) 28th Annual Wine & Cheese Festival Hosted at Waterwheel Farm 124 Fredon-Marksboro Road Fredon, New Jersey 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Friends of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice and Burke’s Wine & Liquor invite you to spend an afternoon at beautiful Waterwheel Farm-enjoying fine wines, cheeses, live band, auctions and more!
