I usually frequent the Ferrari 365/400 forum on F-Chat but am now taking my first tentative steps into the Maserati forum - please be kind....

As part of a parcel if cars I recently bought from a collector I now find myself in possession of a RHD 1975 Maserati Khamsin auto in need of TLC.

The car is VIN No. 120.327, has been off the road for many years and has covered only 30,542 miles.

This is a stalled restoration project and although partially dismantled appears to be more or less complete. The engine has been rebuilt (photos confirm this) and runs although as yet I haven't tried moving the car under its own steam as the hydraulics haven't been checked hence no brakes etc.

Bodily it's in excellent, rust free condition but had a mediocre, unfinished paint job years ago so would need redoing properly. Interior appears complete but needs work.

I'm in two minds whether to keep and restore or sell as is but would probably let it go if the right offer came along so feel free to PM me if more info/pix are required.

I've posted just one photo but have loads more.

The car is located in Ilford in Essex.

    Hello Russ,

Many thanks for the information and welcome, you will find this section quite civilized we don't throw prancing horse statues at each other or compete about knowledge here:)

This is certainly a car that comes out of nowhere, the only information I have on it is courtesy of Andy Heywodd from McGraths: AM120327 sold new by Citroen UK on March 3rd 1975 to a David McMillan. Nothing since then so it has lived totally under the radar.

Any more photos and information would be most welcome, I can send someone to inspect it by appointment.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Hi Marc,

The photo's aren't great (some are very washed out) but I uploaded an 86mb pdf file to my ftp - feel free to download the file at:

    www.romar.co.uk/Cars/Maserati/Maserati-pix24-12-13.pdf

The front bumper and front and rear screens are not fitted to the car but I have them along with the stainless surround trims, headlamp surrounds plus the missing passenger door to window stainless trim with rubber and loads of other parts. I'm not saying the car is complete as I'm pretty sure some trim parts are missing but I believe most of it is there.

I believe the car was originally white and it appears to be really solid everywhere I've checked so far. This week I'll get it off the ground and give it a thorough check over.

These cars come up so rarely part of me is loathe to let it go but I have way too many projects on at the moment so am open to (sensible) offers.

As you'll see from the pdf images there's a bit of rodent damage localised to one dash top vent and surrounding material and possibly one corner of the back seat but that seems to be it.

Obviously mice have less exotic tastes !!

    Hello Russ,

    Thanks for posting the PDF,

It has obviously been in the wrong hands, as you say hamfisted paint, they seem to have forgotten to paint the spare tire trap door but it seems most of the car is there so a decent base to start from. Suggest you do an inventory of what is missing which will be any buyer's first question.

I don't currently have any client looking for an automatic project but it is good to know how to contact you.

Is this the car that was near Cambridge (UK) in Chatteris or a similarly sounding town?

    Best regards,

    Marc

    Russ,

You would make the decision of ownership a lot easier if you get the hydraulics working. and thus give it the ability to move under its' own power.

This is not at all as daunting as it seems. Your first step would be to replace the main sphere and the 2 accumulators, located below/rear of the hydraulic fluid tank. These parts don't cost much and are not that difficult to replace.

Once you've done this, you know what you have, but beware, once you drive the car, you won't want to part with it.

Funny how mice like to eat dash-tops. Mine suffered a similar fate, but the critter died, (years ago) and I found what was left of it under the passenger seat:)

    Good luck!

    Jack. (Khamsin #435 RHD manual)

    Hi Russ,

I am interested to see the pictures about the engine rebuild. Are the front and rear screens with the car?
Noted that this is an automatic: being RHD, automatic and the state it is in, this project will have a very limited appeal.

    Rgds,

Both front and rear screens, stainless surrounds, front bumper etc are all with the car. I'll scan some photos of the engine rebuild and post them in the next few days.

    Hi Jack,

Doing the hydraulic work doesn't worry me, other than getting the engine running I just haven't had time to do anything further at this point. Time to do this is my main issue at present.

There may be others but I found some pix of the engine being rebuilt.

I've had a chance to look over, around and under the car and other than some to-be-expected surface rust on the suspension it's rock solid with no apparent corrosion evident anywhere. The chassis looks perfect, the bodywork is actually very good indeed and the car's really straight with no sign of any major damage or repair work whatsoever. I don't think the paint has even been properly flatted down since the repaint X years ago.

Will hopefully spend some time on the hydraulics and brakes etc. when time permits.

Since my last posting some more trim pieces have arrived and I'm pretty certain that the vast majority of the trim parts etc are with the car now.

    Hi Rusty

Just noticed your Khamsin project , and its an auto.
I am looking at a couple of Maserati cars at present , one was a nice Khamsin I was just showing my wife , and surprisingly she said I should keep looking for one with an auto ( she does not like driving our older manuals).
If you would like to send me your number or mail contact to [email protected] and we can have a chat about this project and your plans for it

    Hi Rusty,
There is nothing to be worried about the LHM system, as other people with correct knowledge have already advised.
The main issues arise that cause system failure are people not using the correct system fluid, and putting brake fluid or coolant in damaging seals and the like.
The system spheres are pressure storage components when the engine is switched off/stops they allow the system to continue to work for a period of time.
The LHM system part of my car is maintained by a classic Citroen specialist who knows system in all its detail. They are based in Surrey.
I don't know if there are special checks, apart from the usual fluid levels, etc that need to be done prior to starting the system after many years of storage.
When you have the car started you can test the functions as well as the health of the system by certain operation tests that have appeared on this site somewhere.
    Best regards,
    Richard

Well, I've been down a few "word of mouth" dead ends with a couple of potential buyers but nothing's panned out.

I find people very strange - they arrange to come and see the car but don't turn up and then fall off the planet and won't answer your calls or texts. Surely if you change your mind it's a simple matter of letting the owner know that you've changed your mind ? To me that's common courtesy but maybe I'm old school about manners.

I haven't advertised the car as yet so thought I'd post on the forum to see if anyone wanted to get in first, if so PM me please as I haven't been on the forums for months due to having no time at present.

    Anyway, back to the Khamsin:-

We've done some basic servicing work and she's responded really well. She starts, runs and drives (we haven't refitted the front or rear screens as they'll need to come out again when the car's painted so it seems a bit pointless).

Hydraulics all work inc. headlamp pods, seat, self centering steering and brakes. The brakes are unreal and she stops if you even blow on the peddle which took me by surprise. I knew they were supposed to be sharp but bloody hell !!!

I've gone all over, under and around the car and she's rust free. A light coating of surface rust underneath but appears totally unwelded.

Yes, she needs a re-trim and a respray and mechanical overhaul due to many years of slumber but she's NOT rusty anywhere and doesn't need any major bodywork or welding/rust removal at all. A few trim bits are missing but she's 95% complete and will be fantastic when done properly.

Have a look at the photo's and PM me if genuinely interested - I have too many projects on the go to waste time with daydreamers.
