There off and ready to be restored....there so rusty I can't imagine what they were originally.

Should I paint or plate them?

    Thanks Chris

They should be plated, but it's expensive.

    Thanks Dan....

Everything else in resto is expensive.....why would this be any different!!

I was thinking of sending them out to PMB Performance. looks like they do a nice job.

    I dismantled completely and re-built.

Bought the calipers and gaskets in the US.

Yellow and black plated down there by a specialist.

I just thoroughly cleaned mine and then clear coated them with VHT clear 2 years ago, I did not go all the way and have them plated, re-sleeved in stainless and replace pistons with new stainless pieces as these cars are never ever going to see salt and snow. My pistons were fine, rebuffed them, also buffed the cylinders, new seals, new rubber lines. 2 years later and a few thousand miles, I just took off the wheels, cleaned and waxed the inner side of rims, cleaned the calipers with a brass brush and touched-up the clear..... just like new.

If I re-built my brakes, as all the rest, it's not cause they were worn or in bad cond., but just cause I try to do a Concours cond. resto.

O'm waiting for the new anti-rattles...

My old pistons are in superb conditions, however the 45 y.o. gaskets needed to be changed.

One of my front calipers, before re-building :

Look nice but I do not think they were originally black.

Maybe on your car since it had a lot of special stuff but not on the 30+ Ghiblis I've owned.

WHat's the colour of yours, under the dust ?

    Ivan,

Yes, you are right, we have to take into account that the one I'm talking about has many one ofs.

Certainly not a car of this caliper ... ;)

Lighten up guys. If they were bright red with big tridents on them I think it would be a big deal to most folks on this forum.

The later cars like the Bora were plated with what I do not know perhaps nickel? Then they have a big blue splotch of paint on the flat machine sides. Anyone know why? LHM designation?

    A light grey color.

I happen to like the Eastwood grey caliper paint. It dries very quickly and is brake fluid resistant.

I found this boxed NOS Girling E type caliper on Ebay.
I think it is the same as used on the Ghibli, or very similar.
Anyway, as you can see it is grey, and seems plated??

    Regards. Mark.
