Very nice ensemble of footage, Thanks!

The turning radii of the F1 cars get quite a challenge negotiating the hairpin turn at 1:20..

    It's all pretty hairy ...

Check out the safety equipment level!

I thought the cockpit shot of the shift was interesting in that I'm surprised they set that up back then? Maybe it's a modern recreation?

I pondered that as well, but figured that a serious racing effort of the day would have, like today, applied the most modern information gathering technology available.
    - Today we have telemetry.
    - Back then they had cameras.
So why not mount one at such an angle from which to later analyze gear changes, speed, grip, apexes, etc.?

    Cheers,

    Fantastic video. Thanks for posting.

Regarding cameras, how the heck did the onboard camera on Fangio's car get shots that were so stable? I'm impressed.

I'd like to hear an explanation from the Maserati on this one.
I see no purpose other than entertainment value and that's OK!

Given the technical capabilities at that time and the size of cameras back then this looks like a modern recreation to me.

You might be right, but the footage of Fangio at the test track in Modena, from circa 1957, reminds me a lot of the sort of studio shots you see in movies where the actors are sitting in a fake car with a moving picture behind them, only in this case it looks real. The point is that if the movie studios could make stable pictures for the "moving background" perhaps they did have stabilizing technology back then that could be used on an F1 car.

Except that the front wheels and steering wheel are also moving quite a lot.
You didn't get that in so of those B movie fake driving scenes.

I dunno maybe they had a compact movie camera perfectly focused and all it got was footage of that gearshift lever. It's not that important the piece works well.
