OK, Please keep this thread dedicated to the sale and purchase prices of the Merak,

This is not the place to debate the merits of certain models other than how they relate to the price of the cars we are discussing.

For the past year I have been watching sales closely worldwide, like most exotics they have also jumped in value as of late. I remember plenty of cars for sale in the 10-15k range even in running condition, but no more.

Also I notice cars that are SS and non SS going for roughly the same price contrary to thousands of people in the past claiming otherwise, but I am breaking my own rule above so without further adieu,

This 1975 Merak sold over the weekend in Europe, the car had no information regarding its running condition and the rear bonnet latch was stuck so no way to inspect the engine (I was told) The car had a respray and was originally purchased by an ABBA band member.

    Auction results

Now this one has been for sale a while, I thought it might be a shill bid but I inquired about the car I was told it has sold to Europe but here it is again.

Very nice example, very optimistic price, will he get it? probably not... but the fact he is asking this price shows prices are rising as a whole.

Here is a more realistic car that actually sold at auction. RM auction Arizona 2014.

Lot # 007 1978 Maserati Merak SS Coupe, Body by Giugiaro; S/N AM122AUS2258; Engine # AM1146330610128; Argento Silver/Blue leather; Estimate $45,000 – $60,000; Visually maintained, largely original, 3- condition; Hammered Sold at $40,000 plus commission of 10.00%; Final Price $44,000. No Reserve – 3000/217hp, triple Webers, 5-speed, Campagnolo wheels, Bridgestone Turanza tires. – Tired paint and plastic bumpers. Lightly worn interior. Light rash on the wheels. Rear view mirror is coming apart. Aged, but it is all there, is a rare and desirable SS model, and is represented with low miles.

The eBay silver Merak that keeps getting bids for 69 k and then relisted is actually the same car as the 44k car from the RM Arizona auction earlier this year.

The paint sure looks better in the eBay photos- was it just worked on/rejuvenated or was the car repainted?

Ahhh, that's interesting, I guess they bought it to flip... Your right, the paint looks much better, would be interesting to see what was done to the car after the auction purchase.

Actually, Bonhams sold on 13 Sep 2014 at Goodwood a mid-series Merak SS, red on black, AM122.A.1344, no Citroën hydraulics, ex company of Benny Anderson (ABBA), Lot 248, for GBP 97,741 = USD 104,301.
Even given the exquisite venue and the prominent history, figures look brighter here in Europe.

Watch the money! Merak's stayed around $15,-20,000 a long time. These are really cheaper and easier to work on and much nicer to drive. Just maybe this is real. On the other hand

It looks more to me that the classic car market has exploded (the last 3-4 years especially) across the board. Unsure economic times maybe leads people to find alternative investments.

It hasn't been a gradual appreciation over the long term, but only recently. Ghibli's have increased 2-3x, not to mention 3500GTs and Sebrings, which have also gone through the roof. This pulls up the value of other cars that people weren't previously as interested in, like the Indy and Mexico.

About the only Maserati that hasn't been affected by the bubble is the QP3 and BiTurbos, both holding steady, although well preserved/restored examples have been creeping up in price too.

    My 2 centavos.

Those HSV's are awesome Julian - how much of that is your work?

What will HSV do after the Commodore ceases production? Will we see HSV Camaro's?

These are great little cars but the prices shown at the top this threads are simply outlandish for that car.

The prices increase are looking like a wall for most italians over the past year/2 years.

I beleive we are in the last throws of a mjor car bubble, may be 1 more year and then someone will be left holding the bag.

that car should be a bit under the 308 or the same. V6, not V8, M not F car, competitors at the times but made at less example.

but again the 3x8 prices are also mostly out of control..

the real issue with merak is the rust going to places you hardly can fix or even see.so past ownership seems to be paramount

EDIT:Nice thread idea by the way. I like the Merak

The British mags were suggesting that the Merak would be worth more because of its scarcity. Ferrari built an awful lot of 308s and as you say, rust has killed a fair few Merak too. So if you decide you want one you might need to pay more for it. And despite all of that, you may well be right about that bubble

How do we explain the Dino, v6 instead of 8 could be purchased for 25k 10 years ago and I remember all the complaints that it wasn't a v8, not a real Ferrari, too many of them etc etc.

Now a rust bucket dino sells for over 100k.

I am not saying the Merak will rise like a Ferrari, but its truly a rare, beautiful, italian car from a maker with racing heritage ..

I think what killed Maserati was its Chrysler connection, the Chrysler TC rubbed the Maserati name into the mud...
