The rubber boots on my rear ball joints were all cracked. My GranSport has only 16,500 miles. They are made out of a very cheap material. Imagine my surprise when I learned the rear ball joints are integrated into the control arm. That's right, you can't buy just new ball joints. You have to buy the whole control arm.

I called the dealer to see how much it would cost to replace all four. Are you ready for this........$7,000!!!!!!!!! Are you mechanically inclined and want to do it yourself? Are you ready for this......the parts alone are over $5,000!!!!!! ($900 each for uppers and $1,800 each for lowers) (Parts are slightly cheaper for a 4200)

Luckily, I was able to find some custom make dust covers that fit these cars for $120. HOWEVER, this only works if your ball joints aren't worn out. When the covers tear, dirt enters and wears out the joint quickly. That's why it's imperative to check them sooner rather than later and save some big $$$.

Thanks for the warning/reminder! This is a well known issue with those cars.

Could you describe your dust cover solution in more detail?

    Thank you.

There is a similar issue on some Jaguars of the same vintage but in that case people have sourced new front control arm bushings (a bit different but ...) that can be pressed in. Is that at all possible with these cars? I know Maserati probably won't help out.

As far as I know, nobody has developed a way to change them without damaging the control arm.

Thanks for pictures. Very instructive. Who supplied you with the new rubber boots?

Someone who had them custom made when his went out. He ended up buying multiple sets and sells them to others who need them. There's a YouTube video detailing the whole replacement procedure.

That's the problem. They are integrated into the control arm and can't be removed without damaging it.

Ref. my "Which one?" Post is this a big enough concern to go with the '09 GT instead of the '05 Anniversary. Spyder.

I am 99% sure that David Askew in the UK had a contact who replaced the ball joints of the 3200. David Askew's Maserati Parts Service THAT saves you a ton of money.. This is several years ago though..

In my opinion, no, it shouldn't be. This is an issue that seemingly has a relatively cheap solution.

Doesn't the dealer sell the boots? Seems like this ought to be a common item replaced as part of the regular service inspections done by dealers.
