My brother took his Maserati Quattroporte to have tires put on. They had the car a week because he was out of town. He picked it up today and this is what he found. Check engine light, rear left window shade inoperable and this nasty sound when coming down to idle. Any thoughts? Video is horrible, but there is nothing to see, only hear. You might have to download it to play.

    Thanks!

The sound seems constant, but is emphasized when returning to idle...

Also, the vid was taken while car was parked, so the sounds happens whether the car is rolling or not...

don't touch it. Contact the shop owner and proceed down the path of frustration.

The audio doesn't want to work on my phone, but hopefully the tire shop was a reputable establishment and not just the cheapest deal he could find. Regardless, I hope he kept track of the mileage both before and after the service as it sounds like someone may have been 'enjoying' it while he was away...

That sounds like the typical oil pump chain tensioner failure. It can happen at any time. It requires the front timing cover to be removed to replace it. I have done quite a few of them. Its a new updated part that replaces the old unit for this very reason.

Hey there, sounds like you have the dreaded timing variator issue going on there. What you must do is replace both timing variators, both timing variator solenoids, and have the camshaft main bearing caps modified with a specific check valve to control the oil drain down when the engine is off. This is not a repair for the average mechanic because the camshafts have to be degreed correctly otherwise you run the risk of setting a check engine light due to the cams not being timed correctly. Also you must have a scan tool to check/reset camshaft timing values. After the repair is made the car should be bullet proof. I have repaired many 4.2 QP'S and Gran Tourismo cars over the years and know the procedure well.
