Can anyone tell me how much oil their 4.7 L requires after an oil/filter change?
The manual states that 10 liters should do it but I have to add much more just to get a reading on the dipstick. I don't want to overfill, but I'm left wondering if I have an oversized oil pan. Any thoughts are welcome.

My 1984 QP3 is the same way. It's a 4.9 L, and book calls for 10 Liters of oil and at about 12L it's at the full line. Glad to hear I'm not the only one!

    Hi---

Also have a 1972 Factory Euro 4.7 Bora.

You are right the dipstick and the manual tell two different stories.
I have always gone with the manual's 10 liter figure for the last 29 years I have had her; until we installed an oil cooler recently. Latest fill at 12 liters.

    Not to worry!

    Regards,

    B.

With the help of MIE, the previous owner, and some careful dipstick measuring, the oil mystery has been solved.
It appears that my Bora has a Bi Turbo dipstick that is a bit shorter than the correct one.
The previous owner used that one after the engine rebuild when the original could not be located.

So, does anyone know where I might locate the correct piece?
    Any leads are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    ~Tom~

    Hi---

In my humble but considered opinion your oil mystery has not been solved.
I bought my Bora 29 years ago from its original ultra fanatic owner; the car's history is documented to the point of absurdity from the moment it was imported new by Randy Randazzo (Tony's dad) to New Jersey.
In other words there is no question that my car has the correct dipstick.
Nonetheless the discrepancy I described above remains.

    Regards.

I have no doubt that the value in the manual and the actual capacity on our cars can vary by a bit.
I wasn't able to get a reading on that dipstick until I put in over 14 liters, which is obviously
    incorrect under any condition.
In conclusion, I need to get the correct dipstick and go from there.
MIE is trying to locate one and if anyone else has any ideas , please chime in.
    Thank you.

Talking about Tony Randazzo; this is your lucky day:

It certainly looks correct; worst case scenario mark the right spot after 10 liters!

Thanks for the heads up. I just spoke with Tony and he measured that dipstick at 18.5 inches. The one I need is 20.5 from the rubber seal to the end.
Is anyone willing to post a picture of the correct dipstick? I would like to see the level markings and the rubber stop.

    From top to bottom, '77 Bora, '80 QP3, '89 430.
Only the QP3 dipstick has min and max markings, but the narrowed area is the same width as the Bora one.
The QP3 dipstick has a smaller bead on the seal, which changes the dimension to the markings slightly. It could be worn, but both engines have about 30k miles.

Dimension from the underside of the QP3 seal to the end of the dipstick is 20.8", for the Bora one it's 20.6". From the Bora seating surface to the top of the full mark is 19.4".

While we talk about oil: what is your experience regariding oil pressue with a 4.7l Bora?
When they are warm, say @3000rmp - 3 bars? More?

Fully warmed up @ 3K rpm, a little less than 3 kg/cm2 as read by your gauge.

    1 kg/cm2 = .98 bar

    Regards.
