Acquired an Indy 4.9 a year ago and began the restoration process then. Only a few short weeks away from the completed project but wanted to share my experience.

Manufactured in September 1971 model Indy 4900 (AM116/49)

Matching number chassis and engine - as certified by Maserati Classiche (Modena)

One of only 300 Indy 4.9s and one of only 39 USA models with the manual type ZF 5/325 gearbox

    Original Campagnolo Casted wheels

Originally delivered to Grossman Motor Cars in West Nyack, New York

Indy was stripped, scrapped down, rust removed (apparently there is always rust on older Maseratis - first time for me too).

Color changed to Celeste Chiarro (grey) for the exterior over Rosso (red) for the interior. Dash is proper mouse hair.

    More pictures to come.

A full description of mechanical work done will follow next week.

    Looking forward to more.

Why does your car have 14"wheels? Didn't all Indy 4.9 come with the 15"Starburst wheels like Ghibli and Khamsin?

    Best,

    Jack.

No and they are a SOB to get on & off of a lift because they are very low to the ground in one spot. The one I was using/working on had 15" after market wires on it too! So 14" must be even worse! Same color car as this one. Looks very nice in bright sunlight! I drove a 4.7 through the California hills from Sacramento to Monterey and it was quite lovely.

    Nice Indy :)
I am also the owner of an Indy 4900 1972. I just wish it had manual gear like Yours. The rearend ratio on mine is hopeless, I plan to install a 2.88 instead this winter.
Do You have problems withe the cooling system? Maybe I am paranoid, but I beleive the temperature is always too high. Im consider to install an electric water pump. Continhous hi flow at low rpm sounds good. Or what???
Good luck with Your Indy :)

Would love to see a photo of your 72 4.9. No issues with the rear end or the water pump (although it needed to be rebuilt) and the temperature is fine. I hope it's paranoia.

The Indys with the Citroen hydraulics had the 15" wheels. This one does not have the Citroen hydraulics.

Looks like you are doing excellent work!

Celeste Chiaro is a light blue color, not grey.

You are correct and thanks Ivan. I was originally going with Celeste Chiaro but ended up with going with Grigio Argento.

BRG Bisgaard - your Indy looks real nice. I like the look of both the 14" Campagnola and the 15" Starburst on the Indy. Such an underappreciated car and performs better than most classics of its era.

The wheels have been confirmed by Maserati Classiche (with the help of Kerry at Maserati Club International) as being Dial Borrani forged and not Campagnola. This makes more sense since they are 14" and this is an early production Indy.

Additional and proper badges/decals have been sourced by Candini in Modena. The help from Maserati Classiche has been unmatched in both providing classiche certification and helping source proper parts.

Maserati S.p.A. confirms my matching numbers early 4.9 (September 1971) with the manual gearbox (ZF S 5/325) and DIAL Borrani Forged wheels. This is a 1 of only 39 US model 4.9s with the 5-speed gearbox. The internal factor order will confirm even scarcer options with power steering and A/C.

Original Internal Factory Order shows this Indy 4.9 to be an early production model (45th overall of the 300 4.9s made) with power steering and radio.
