I have a hardwired Passport 9500ci in one of my Ferrari's but am in need of the BEST "portable" radar detector for use in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

I would be much obliged to any insight anybody has and/or positive/negative opinions on radar detectors you've had the best luck with.

Thank you all in advance! :)

Obligatory Radar Detectors and associated technologies are illegal in VA.

Portable? Try the Solo 3 from Cincinnati Microwave. Battery-powered, so it's about as portable as you can get. Good performance, too.

Be careful. Over 80 is a rather bad ticket here already. Add getting nabbed with an operating detector and you'll need a good lawyer.

Just having a radar detector in a vehicle operational or not is a $110.00 VA ticket. State police appear to have the technology to detect even 'undetectable' units.

Escort Redline Expensive but totally (electronically) undetectable, and has a dark mode. Be smart and put it in hard to see location in the car.

Everyone says valentine 1 but do not think it is undetectable. Does anyone know of PHANTOM -T RMR-C495 Police Radar Jammers
it is undetectable and a jammer sounds awesome.

Given what I know and reading the comments here(from many others VA residents), I would not reside in VA while owning a high HP/fast car. I would move as being an auto enthusiast is apparently not a wise choice in the state of VA. Of course, this is simply IMHO...

I like living in Virginia a lot, but I agree that you have to be careful with a hp/fast car here.

If I could change the VA state laws, I would:

    - make radar detectors legal. I personally think this helps with public safety since it makes police cars "visible" for miles.

    - eliminate the automatic Reckless Driving charge for speeding over 20 mph over the limit (or when doing more than 80 mph). Reckless Driving should only be cited when someone is doing something extraordinarily reckless, regardless of the speed involved.

    - get rid of the annual Personal Property Tax on cars. In my County, it is 4.2% of the car's blue book value, paid every year. So, on a new Ferrari, that is typically over $10k per year, every year.

    - make front license plates optional.

Anyone know how to effectively lobby the State legislators to get these laws changed?

Crowd fund Ferraris for all state legislators. Then it'd be in their own self interest to repeal these laws; then they'll act.

Seriously though, enough high tax bracket, Ferrari owning families move out of VA, leaving behind lower tax bracket folks, may be the only way, and knowing politicians, it'd take decades before they admit they goofed...T

Didn't they try the phased tax repeal in 2000. Lasted about 6 months of a 3 year plan.

Not going to happen, they have the car tax to keep property taxes low, so most of the people that own Ferraris would see their tax liability go up with the resulting property tax increases as they won't have renters paying in any more. The laws were set up so that wealthy land owners could pay less taxes and lower income renters would pay more as everyone needs cars these days and not everyone owns land.

Exactly, do you want to pay the tax on your land or on your car? It is not cheap to run a Commonwealth the size of Virginia and still have good schools, police/fire, and generally good roads. This does shift the burden for everyone to pay a bit of the share, versus just putting it all on the land owners. The car tax is a hit to the wallet every Fall, but I have registered cars in states where just the DMV fees surpassed our car tax.

My only complaint is that we're taxed at a different rate in Northern Virginia than the rest of the Commonwealth.

It is your locality, not the Commonwealth that is getting that little extra. And face it, we get much better services here than they get down in the southern end. Just compare our public schools to theirs.

I use to live in Norfolk when I was in the Navy. I was a computer technician and used radar and sonar inputs for targeting. The way the Virginia State Police are trained is to notice how you react to instant-on radar. If you slow down, they know you have a radar detector. They also pull up next to you if they suspect you have a radar detector and hit you with a blast and watch your car light up, and they got you. Virginia State Police are well trained and they are only second to Maryland State Police. I'm glad I now live in Pennsylvania where the police are poorly trained and we are not taxed! Pay attention to their patterns, they love to sit where there are reduced speeds as you enter small towns and get you for 20 miles over the speed limit.

Not to derail this thread too much, but when I lived up where Matt Boyd lives, I paid more in car taxes on my Triumph Spitfire than I paid for the 308. Where I live now, the old Jags are not taxed *at all*.

Don't know what all of you are complaining about - you're just living in the wrong part of the state! LOL! :D
