    Greetings all!

I am wondering if any of you have gone through the process with the MVA to use period or vintage tags on your older vehicles. I know (ok, think) it can be done in MD. I have searched the MVA website but see nothing that applies. My efforts with my all-knowing-friend Google were not much better. I am just not hitting on the right key words.

    Anyone?

Thanks folks! And may the salt stay away for many more weeks...

Curtis, Call me. I have been doing it for years. Maryland's policies are great and simple.

No wonder they don't put them on the web site. It would ruin their reputation! I'll give you a ring in a little bit.

    Hope all is well!

We have 1969 tags on a GTO. The current MD tag is stored in the trunk.

Thanks Al - but are the 69 tags legal according to the MVA/troopers?

Or is that all anyone does and just keeps current tags in the trunk and hope for an understanding officer?

    Legal

Go to any muscle car event and you'll see many with the actual matching year tags (in MD).

Always keep the current tag and reg in the trunk. We've done this for 20+ years now.

So does this make you immune to speed cameras and red light cameras?

It's my wife's car and she never speeds or runs red lights

    Good question Luke
I don't want her to put it to the test. We pay the insurance company $$$$ already for all our cars without any tickets or points

Go for it, Al! In the name of science - or is it fraud? Regardless, the photo tickets are not reported to insurance...

You probably know more about insurance fraud than me. Thanks for the advice.

    Luke and others,

Finally got to the bottom of using "period" tags on vintage cars in MD. You can go here http://www.mva.maryland.gov/_resources/docs/VR-188.pdf to see the form

Car must be over 25 years old. (Historic or Street Rod tags)
Plate must be issued in year of car's production
Plate must be inspected to make sure it is legible
You register this vintage plate with the state which references it to your current tag. MVA Form VR-188 (10-12)
    $25 one time fee.
You can display tag on your car and must carry current tags with you.

So, Luke, no, you are not immune to electronic enforcement. :(

Unfortunately this will not work for the 308 as I had hoped as by 1977 they had stopped issuing dated tags. Instead I was able to secure an appropriate vanity plate that until recently was not available!

nO, BECAUSE THE OLD TAG WILL CROSS REFERENCE IN mva'S SYSTEM WITH THE NEW TAG.
