Has anyone taken the Amtrak train between KC and StL? I have never been on a train and was thinking about it... What is around the train station in StL? I'd stay overnight and come back the next day, but don't know a thing about what is around the train station in StL, if it is safe, has lots of things and hotels within walking distance, etc.
the train station in STL is a dump, and you're likely to get shot. go 15 miles west to Kirkwood (where I used to live), nice suburb with free parking right next to the station. lots of bars/restaurants, etc around the station too. it's a fun trip, I've done Kirkwood to Jefferson City. I think all the way to KC is ~6 hours. take a camera, and/or a book
You're right about the train station in STL. Our daughter just rode the KC to Kirkwood line to see Jimmy Fallon perform (he sucked) and it took a little more than 6 hours.
Kirkwood good area......downtown you are close to civic center and the Old Union Station has dried up ...... pan handlers on every corner and don't walk after dark alone. If just looking for a fun trip on the train, get off at Hermann and stay at B&B and tour wineries
I may look back into this. I was going to do this a year ago with the wife. Now she's an ex-wife. Might do this with the new G/F....
My dad's done it a few times when I was living in KC - good scenery, but I would almost recommend driving. Not a lot of touristy stuff around Kirkwood, just bars/restaurants and some shopping. If you do this, let me know, I'll buy you a beer
We took the Amtrak from Kirkwood to KC and it was really nice also took 5 hours or so. met people on train too. Kirkwood has plenty in walking distance, but also grab a cab and ask where the fun is.
I may do this, thanks.. As far as driving goes, I love to drive as well, but the point of it is to take a train - something I have never done. The original plan was to take the (now ex-) on it because her dad is retired Union Pacific and she has never been on a train - ever. I WOULD take it across Nebraska, except it only comes thru here at midnight - not a lot to see between midnight and 5am... I appreciate this guys, I think all we need is a few places to kill time, and then take a train back the other way a few hours later so we don't need a ton of things to do... we do like visiting wineries also.
