Hi all 1983 Mondial qv Just been asked to pay 180 euros for oil change oil 7.52 Euros per litre of cooling fluid they say 24 litres required? = 175.68 Both + Tax This is from an independent specialist here in SW France he charges 70 euros per hour which is fine. But the fluid prices? What do you all think? Thanks dandpl
That converts to = $228 US dollars Do it yourself, it costs me under $100 for oil and filter. I believe its around $150 - $200 in the states at a specialty shop. You are paying for your time and convenience my friend.
Its not just water, but they have to flush out the old, put in the new coolant, bleed the air out, and pressure test the system for leaks. This is not something most people can or want to do but its all doable if you want to get your hands a little dirty. And you have to properly dispose the toxic waste at a designated site, so account for time to do that as well if you do it yourself. ref: 7.52 Euros per litre of cooling fluid they say 24 litres required? = 175.68
Rob, most auto part stores have a place to dispose of the used oil and coolant. Check with your local Autozone, Pep boys etc and they should not charge you for it. I believe gas stations with a service bay will take them as well. Also the city recycle/dump area should be able to take them as well, but call ahead to make sure that they do. I just called Pep Boys in my town to ask: he said they take up to 5 gallons of used oil and coolant per customer per visit. More than that would be an EPA disaster zone of high proportions!
I have found that with oil but not antifreeze for some reason here in the northeast even our local dump takes just about everything but antifreeze although they do have a date once or twice a year were they will just take just about anything. It's tough also to find somewhere for the water to go as your flushing the system as you do want to clean all the old out. I'm wondering what would be the best way to flush the system on the Mondial on front engine cars I've done in the past I disconnected the upper rad. hose and lower rad. hose and ran water through the engine that way to flush everything out. On the mondial you have a whole lot more of hose to flush out!
As you can see, the cooling system is sealed with an opening in the expansion tank, bleed valves, and a water drain tap in front. It will take some time to drain with the rear up! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mike I was wondering if you would flush out the engine and the radiator seperate of each other another words disconnect the hose were the coolant enters the engine and disconnect the hose were the coolant leaves the engine and flush the engine out and then drain the radiator and flush it out and if you weren't replacing the hoses that run from the engine to the radiator then you would have to flush them also.
I have not had the pleasure to do a coolant flush on mine as it was done at ECS in Sterling VA last year when my expansion hose busted, so that was replaced along with a coolant flush, bleed, refill, and pressure test. But, the procedure is best described by Birdman if you want to tackle it: http://www.birdmanferrari.com/service/coolant/coolant_bleed.htm
Every Ferrari mechanic was once just a wet nose and two left hands, just like you and I. We're all made of the same stuff!
According to the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation: Most licensed automotive repair and servicing shops have their spent oil and antifreeze picked up either as a waste for disposal or as a recyclable product.
I wonder if those prices have some recycling fees included, like we have with freon, tires and batteries.
I thought it would be easy down here in Louisiana to get rid of my coolant. Not so. No auto part store takes coolant. Oil yes, coolant no. Called repair shops. They wouldn't touch mine even though they recycle their own. I had to wait for a local hazardous waste day and my schedule made me miss the first annual 1.5 hour wait in line to get rid of it. I had it for two years in a bucket then was able to get rid of it after that 1.5 hour wait, 20 miles from my home. Next coolant change will keep this in mind.
I get my oil changed here in Louisiana at regular oil change places, and I've never paid over $60.00. An oil change in a Mondial / 308 does not require a specialty mechanic, IMHO. That would be like paying a celebrity chef to cook a hot dog. The best part is that these guys are usually excited to be working on a Ferrari and will let me get under the car to point out various parts, design features. And I love walking around under my car and looking it over.
It is the same here. I used to work at a GM dealership and our furnace for the building ran off waste oil so we would use all the old oil. I would imagine this is what a lot of other repair shops do. One of the main issues with antifreeze is pets being attracted to it by the sweet smell so even if you spill a relatively small amount if your neighbors pet comes over and licks it up its bye bye rover or fluffy.
At home, I use a (UFI filter $50 + Castrol Synthec oil 10w40 $4 a quart x 10) so its $90 for just parts. I don't think I would do it for cheaper, I like the good stuff! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Engine 3.2 Oil Capacity 2.64 gallons / (10 liters) / 10.56 quarts
Like all European mechanics, he makes his margin on everything he touches and everything that goes through his hands. It sounds like you might also be paying the F-car surcharge. Look on line for the prices there are good prices available in France. I will look for the link. I cant put my finger on it right now. Do your own oil changes. It forces you to look carefully at your car. Salut.
Fram filters have collapsed a few times killing the engines. Baldwin b253 filter is made for trucks but is a common replacement filter for our cars. About 10 bux and well made.
A quick search showed that the Baldwin b253 is not compatible with the Mondial t. It fits 308, 328, 512boxer, Mondial 8, qv, 3.2, bit these are great quality but alot cheaper than UFI.
