I recently completed a DIY at-home engine out service on my 1990 Mondial t. Replaced gaskets, camshaft seals and o-rings, tensioners, belts, set timing, set valve clearances to spec, and replaced fuel lines. In the following, I'll post some photos along with some commentary along the way. To start, here are my repainted valve covers. I used paint remover from Advance Auto and engine paint from Autozone.

Hey aec, lovely job! I'm pulling my camshafts today and doing seals and shims.
    Good clear pics too ;-)

Used micrometer to get top-dead-center on cylinder #1. Set timing using timing marks on cams. I had previously verified that timing marks on cams actually coincided with open and close timing specs relative to TDC. I chose to install my gaskets 'dry', with dabs of silicone sealer placed only at the junctions between gaskets and o-rings and between gaskets (I like my Ferrari dry, not wet).

But then I suddenly realized I forget to remove the paper towels!! So I had to repeat that step on one bank. Now I understand the stories about surgeons leaving instruments inside their patients!!

And here is the last photo. Valve covers back on. While I was doing my engine-out service, I was skeptical if all this engine service work was actually going to make a lot of difference in how the engine performed. I was pleasantly surprised! Setting the valve clearances (about 9 shims had to be adjusted) and setting the cam timing (when the old cam timing appeared to be just a little off on one cam) have made a very significant difference. It now just sounds all more together, more like what I always thought a Ferrari should sound like. I now feel confident to venture towards the redline.

    Very tasty indeed.

Only one small caution for others. Best not to set cams upright on the end cam wheel. They are extremely brittle, and if tipped over could crack/break, or you could deform a lobe.

Nice to feel confident about the car with new service I'm sure.

    Hi Aec,

    Very nice thread. Great pics.

Is that a replacement water pump?

BTW - how bad was the old belt when you removed it and how many miles/yrs on it?
    Thanks again,
    Greg

I believe it is the original water pump since there are undisturbed blue paint marks on it. I have no service history, but the mileage is only 13,000 miles. I did not replace with new since I wanted to minimize the number of variables on my first engine-out endeavour. The bearings also felt fine. If the water pump develops a problem, I'll just take the engine out again. If I had payed for an engine-out service, the economics would of course have dictated a water pump replacement.

The old belt did not have any cracks, but there was quite a bit of powderized rubber residue around inside the belt housing and also built up on the tensioner and water pump pulleys. I have no service history, but I saw evidence of previous engine service (e.g., black silicone sealer all around gaskets and camshaft o-rings that I cleaned up to do a 'dry' installation). But I suspect that this service may not have changed the belt. So, I would guess the old belt was 24 years old with 13,000 miles. I'll post a photo of old belt + old tensioners later.

It's quite understandable. Your lucky you can do it.

The reason why is it looked like a Superformance one I got.

    Nice job.

Interesting the casting on the heads for the spark plug holes for the Mondial T. A bit different than on a 348, even though it's supposed to be the "same" engine.
