It took me half an hour to pick up my first spanner but soon got in to the swing. In fact it only took about 6 hrs and was a one man job (excluding making a timber trolley for it to sit on).
Big respect to the guy who did this recently without a car lift!!
No special tools, just had to buy 1 larger spanner for the air con hose, thats it.

The intention is to give it some tlc. The car is not unreliable but i am finding more and more bits that could have left me by the side of the road so more preventative maintenance.

I will post on this thread pics of the jobs i get up to.

Awesome! How high did you needed to lift the body to get the engine rolling out? We are thinking of buying such a lift. Nice work Antwan!
Keep on coming with the pics please :)

Great stuff, seems like a lot of mondial owners are tinkering themselves now. I really could you a lift, but without having the space that's out of the question. Will certainly be following this thread as well.

Any bets on how long it will take to get the engine back in? I'm guessing with all lines, hoses, etc hooked up and fluids in it will take 14 hours.

I can let you know the exact measurement soon. The engine needs to be on a trolley about 230mm tall to get it about level to disconnect the chassis bolts so if I remember correctly it is about 900mm to the base of the valance around the exhaust. I have a single garage with flat roof. The car was as high as it could go without lifting the roof too and I had about 40mm to spare.

I couldn't do without the lift, they are good quality, I wouldn't say exceptional. I chose this one as the safety mechanism is a solenoid and it runs off 240v. No comp air needed.

Agree, reassembly will take a month or so!

Engine almost completely undressed and ready for cleaning before bits are stripped off for powder coating.

Started, alternator to be sent off for refurb. Lots of hoses and replacement gaskets needed.

Lots of oil leaking from lots of places!

I need to source a rear exhaust manifold as I'm not sure how its holding together.

A cool picture of the Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection system which is attached to the engine, other bits remain on the chassis. Not too much to it really. Aux air valve stuck closed and in need of replacement. Nissan use similar units i believe.

Every hose to be replaced. Most have heat or abrasion damage.

Second picture shows some small spacer washers within the rubber gaskets under the plenum. These can easily fall into the intake and cylinders if valves are open. If you are thinking of taking the plenum off maybe to paint it, BEWARE!!!!!!! You may end up with more work than you anticipated.

Any hints, tips and things to look out for... Keep 'em coming! Thanks

While everything is out, I suggest replacing all, and I really mean ALL of the fuel lines. Modern fuels kill the old rubber. So; filler lines, tank crossover lines, vapor return lines, you get the picture.
My car is a "T" variant and I had a cracked fuel rail. I could not have seen it with the engine inside the car. You might check every where fuel touches and change anything that looks suspect. Fires are not nice.

    My 2 cents.

My car sprung a leek about a month ago. It's been out of service for about a month and a half. Getting new fuel lines and a new wheel bearing. Hoping to get it back soon. Ethanol fuel is the devil!

    Antwan,
while mine is (soon to be completely) out I'm doing the engine bay and the 'Bell style' bottom plates as well. Maybe something to consider.

Can you, by any chance, please get a photo showing where the passenger compartment side crankshaft sensor bolts into engine the block? I'm having a lot of trouble getting to it w/ the engine in, & I think a photo might help.
This request has been in both the Mondial & Technical Discussion threads for about q week, but no photos appear to be out there.
    I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks: David

Air valves for the pulse injection are from a 1978,,, jeep Grand Cherokee with the old style body. Ferrari didn't make smog parts.
    ;)
The other Aux Air Valve is BOSCH,, or from Mercedes Benz parts bin.

You have the correct aluminum fuel distributor for the Euro cars.
Don't mix up your fuel injectors.
    Do your shift shaft seals.
    Differential seals.
Change rod nuts to ARP,, if you dig that far.
    Whew.....!

    Good luck.

My heart isnt in it tonight! Its hard to figure out when to stop.
There is so much oil on the outside of the engine, its hard to understand what is leaking.
Would you change the head gaskets/head bolts? Do head gaskets leak like other gaskets do i.e. water/oil seeping out the interface?

    Certainly all hoses are off.
Fuel lines will be replaced as i have started smelling fuel when cornering hard and one fuel line has been resting against my gear shift shaft and almost worn through.

Any tips for draining the tanks, unfortunately i left them about a quarter full, buggar.

David, its not a issue. Goes for anyone else too. I get enough help from this forum!

More pics at various stages of undress.

I do need help on a couple of bits

    1) Which the best joint to split to remove the half shaft. I have taken all wishbone bolts out, i thought the half shaft would be floating in its position like an old BMW i had but not so.

    2) There are two water header pipes in the valley, i suspect one might have been weeping so i am trying to remove it to change gaskets but i guess with water and dissimilar metals, it is absolutely stuck. I thought of trying to remove the studs but they are not long enough to get 2 nuts on. any ideas gratefully received.

    To drain your tanks.
Use your fuel pump first, when it stops drawing fuel, you still have about one gallon left.
( I remember... A whole Lota fuel left.)
Shut off all pilot lights on you gas water heater etc.
    Not kidding.
Last put a drain pan under the tank cross connect hose, 1.5" I believe,, now cut that hose in half, drain all fuel into pan, take pan outside now.

Now, finish removing that old cross connect hose.
    Done.
Light up a smoke,,,,, aaaaaaaa nope.
    ;)

Ehmm well.... If I may.. Using the fuel pump till the end is not really a good idea. :) These fuel pumps are fuel cooled sort of speak. You just need seconds without fuel and sparks may come off.. then it was useless to shut off all pilot lights on you gas water heater etc. :) So don't use it to fully empty it. Stop using it just before it is empty.

Drain it. There is a drain plug on the drivers side (UK) in the middle near your shift shaft. Just cleaned my tank this weekend and changed all the hoses. Recorded it on tape just need to find some time to edit it.

Soak your header pipes with this. Next day they should come off however still might be sticky.

Regarding your fuel hoses. Better replace them all ;) There is a breather hose behind the heat shield to the fuel filler and a smaller one in the back of the engine bay. Some people will scratch behind their ear now :). I can only say.. be scared! This is what I took of today.
