I dont know if you've seen this story about the amazing collection of 50 classic cars, sitting under improvised shed roofs at a farm in western France. There were 4 ferraris among the cars including a 250 Cal GT SWB, a 308 GTS, a 400 and the Mondial 3.2 Cab. They had been parked untouched and mostly forgotten since the guy died 10 years ago. His family finally got around to asking experts about the cars and they were dumbfounded when they drove up to the place.

Here is a link to the UK Daily Mail which has a big article and lots of pics.

Back in the early 90s I was driving on a frozen/salted highway into Paris and saw a black 250 GT California (exactly like the one in the story) up ahead of me. Catching up to it, I was shocked to see such a car on the road during those conditions.

I believe I still have it on tape (VHS camcorder) somewhere...

oh my! what are the odds! I'll get the popcorn! :D Perhaps he didn't bought the Mondial yet and realized it was a bad idea to drive in these conditions and got the Mondial!

Exactely like mine! 3.2 cabriolet rosso corsa over nero from 1988!

Great deals: a 308 GTSi for 10.000€ (max), a car that is rapidly appreciating. Ok, remains to be seen what kind of shape these cars are in, but still...

This gentleman had great taste in cars, namely in Ferraris!

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

That's the average asking price for a mint Mondial over here where I live, so no surprised there. What is really interesting is that the car managed to fetch a considerably higher price than the one everyone anticipated. Good and just news.

That 308 must be shot to pieces. Still, it goes to show how fast 308 appreciation is.

Kind regards and thank you for sharing, Tijn!

    Nuno,

On the whole, the results of the sale of this collection are way too high, and somewhat frightening; real pieces of junk, or rust buckets have been sold for very optimistic amounts. This may signal a bubble in the collectors cars market. As for the “Mondial” cabriolet, it is only “slightly above market” (without the taxes and commissions), and relatively reasonable.

The 308 GTS is just a collection of parts, really; the chassis is good, but the rest is not. The engine is the wrong one, as it is a 3,2 litre, whereas the car is a GTS”i”, so it should have the 3 litre 2-valve injected engine. Furthermore, the 3,2 litre engine that is in the car today has hydraulic clutch, so came from a “Mondial”, as does the instrumentation.
That “thing” is certainly not worth 30.000 euros, let’s say 7.000 and that’s all. My guess is that when the new owner will open his eyes, he will ask himself “what have I done?”. 308 GTS"i" when complete and totally original do not sell at 50.000 today in France, let's say perhaps at 40.000; you would never, ever, get back the money needed for covering a complete restoration of that thing if you bought it at 30.000 euros for restoring it to original: for a start, you need the correct engine! Crazy...

I was there to take care that if this Mondial stays down, I would take it... No it didn't....

I took little time to inspect this car and found that front body part before bonnet is made out of filler and car had some accsidents. Fusebox lid was full of stickers that tell story of bad outdoor parkind, well if you have choose; Mondial or California spider to stay out side.
I have owned 20tkm driven Mondial and...

here is my toughts from 308

It appears that there was a second Mondial and from the looks the donar of the 308.. (can't find a better pic)
In the right corner there is a rear of a beat up Mondial 3.2 without lights put on a stand. No wheels attached. (keep in mind that ther were over a 100 cars. so 40% went to a local scrapyard buyer probably. That says something of the whole lot that was for sale on the auction. exeptions there of course.

It crossed my mind to go like Mikael did, since it was only 350miles away, merely for the engine needless to say. Always nice to have one in stuck and slowly rebuild it.

The chap had money to collect all of these wonderful cars but not enough common sense to build an enclosure to keep them out of the elements. Its a shame !!!

Seems to have been some questions related to legal inheritance matters for a few years, from what has been written about it in the press. Since Mr Baillon himself died a few years ago, his family has had not much interest in the collection, but has to sell it this year mainly for questions related to inheritance matters it seems (?).

I can't believe how much the Mondial sold for in such poor condition.
As mentioned earlier above, the prices were way beyond realistic.

I believe this pretty much sums it up when one sees the prices that the cars sold for, and the condition they were in. Thank you nerofer, I didn't know the state that 308 was in. Things are only worth what people are ready to pay, but this auction seems to challenge that. People are willing to pay a bucketload of money for a little more than a piece of junk. Don't know if this is a telling tale sign of a bubble, but it is certainly imho a sign of market irrationality. I also thought that Mondial was in mint condition (or thereabouts). I believe people are acutely aware that mass production is an enemy of collectability and that Enzo isn't making any more cars, but still... It's too much. Another thing that puzzles me is how much people are willing to pay for wrecked cars involved in accidents. People paying the equivalent of top of the range Mercs and BMWs for Ferraris that need a 6 digit repair to make it roadworthy again. I don't have answers, but I do have a lot of questions!

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

Well, "Retromobile" this year, where those cars were sold, really is now more and more the place for very rich people to buy top-class cars; it has lost some of its original character as a "place for all enthusisasts, with or without money, with modest cars or top-class cars". I think that the whole atmosphere is becoming very snobbish, and this may push people to pay absurd amounts of money for cars that are not much more than rust buckets (which a lot of cars from the "Baillon" collection are indeed).

Let's assume that a good 308"i" sells for 45.000 euros today in France.
The car sold for 30.000 at Retromobile is nothing more than a pile of parts, really; châssis is good, and that's all; engine is of the wrong type, body corroded and in need of a complete high class paint job, interior need to be redone, instruments are of the wrong type...

And it's a Ferrari...and we all know the price of parts and labor; so investing 30.000 in a car that needs about 35.000 more to be done, at least, you will never get the money you have paid for it?

Really, I don't get it. Makes no sense.

    Rgds
