I have a 1989 Mondial T. When I turn the key, the starter motor does nothing. I’ve discovered that the small wire to the starter is not going hot (i.e. +12V) when I turn the key… if I jumper +12V to the terminal to which this small wire connects, then the starter motor turns. I’ve looked in the wiring diagram in the workshop manual and see that the starter circuit includes two relays… a “starter relay” and a “starter inhibition” relay. I’m trying to diagnose the problem and do not know where these are located on the car. I appreciate any help you can provide; much thanks in advance!

    I cat,

I have a 1986 3.2 but most of my relays and fuses are in a clear plastic box located in front left of front trunk. The plastic box lists what the fuses and relays are used for.

At least that is a start. I would also try to find a parts manual for your car. I find it indispensable and worth the $100 I paid.

Is located under the coolant expansion tank, right rear of the engine compartment. I had a occasional no start issue and cleaning the contacts inside the relay as well as the socket fixed the problem for me. I have been told by my mechanic that sometimes replacing the relay is necessary.

I develope two oil leaks this year that were bad. The first was from the oil cooler and so planned to have it replaced. The second was more serious since it was leaking oil right onto the engine exhaust ports. Those started making smoke so bad I stopped driving it till could get my mechanic ready.

One forum memeber suggested a specific stop leak I did not find. But my mechanic said to add one quart of Lucas stop leak. Then I just purchased one of every kind of additive for sale and added all of them. Within a few days the smoke was gone. Still had to add a quart every other tank full, but now that seems to have subsided!

I will be interested if this continues! I am going on 10,000 miles since 2013 and wil consider cam belts soon enough. That would make replacing the front main oil seal a simple addition Will be interested in whether this fix will last that long.

The only advice I have to offer is not to shy away from such product.

    David,

You gave me excellent advice! The starter relay was exactly where you stated it was, in front of the coolant expansion tank. We replaced it (which was simple) and have no further issues.

    Thanks!
