oh dear it is not going well so far, import tax is 37.5% in sweden.
But if i wait 20 months that changes to.........6% via netherlands, so now planning to store the car stateside somehow - or back out of the deal (deposit paid) - bad form but have to be realistic its $10,000 worse not to wait 20 months - and it kills the investment side of things which is 60% why i am throwing hard earned at it.

Ouch Ben! If correctly you do not have no import tax in Sweden when you pay import tax in NL for example when it docs NL. You would need to put in on a Dutch license though. From there it should be easy to get it into Sweden. (you could still drive this year)

    A small calculation..
    1. Import tax and handling costs (Invoerrecht / Douanerecht)
Costs usually approx 10% of what you paid for the vehicle.

    2. VAT TAX (EU VAT Valid)
I believe cars younger then 25 years 21% on what you paid for. Oldtimers are 6%. (If correctly 25 years or older, I would need to check)

    3. Dutch plates approx 250 euro + costs making it EU road worthy.

Get NL export plates and unregister from NL (Free of charge I believe) (You might need to pay for a month of road tax (100 euro) From here drive to Sweden and get Swedish plates. Not sure how it goes in Sweden, but again having heard Swedish colleagues it is easy within EU.

We might be able to store it here for a week or 2 (PM me)

Where in the states is the car? You might find someone over here would have knowledge of options for you like a museum, etc.

Allowing a friend to drive it could be costly. Never know when an old car has a fault. :)

Are there Canadian options? It isn't part of the EU but is a commonwealth of the UK.

There is also the option of ignoring the investment side and enjoying the ride.

    $10,000 = 20 months, that's just about $5,000 a year, -its all perspective.
I remember buying a new car that loss more than $10k in its first 2 years from depreciation and it wasn't even half the fun. This Mondial can only go up from here. :)

Enjoy the ride! BTW, love RIO

thanks for the replies folks, encouragement appreciated.
    @don John(Fran)zen
Option 8 sounds nice, but Rio is not exactly concours with shonky rear valance and ripped seat squab leather – so im not sure if anybody would shelter her. However I reckon her faults are quick fixes – remove valance, saucy new backbox and order new squab leathers. I am also coming round to the 360 rims, they seemed wrong at first, but they are very “Ferrari” so kind of work, I think the more usual 348 wheels or standards work better though. Anyhoo no change planned there for now.
Option 5 - Car is at the docks in Bayonne New Jersey so if you are in Los Angeles im doubtful it can work economically for either unless you fancy a cross country road trip shown below…..
but anyway here would be the deal………………..
You house it in a garage : either a warm garage or cold garage and but if cold then heavy anti freeze or drained coolant over winter (mind you winter might not be so bad in S california!
No winter driving if roads salted.
    You pay insurance fully comprehensive.
Major repairs parts and labour paid me including tyres, exhaust, cats, brakes etc
Consumables paid by you, gas, oil, battery, plugs, filters.
7500 or less miles per annum.
I come over and borrow it next summer for a 1 week service festival and 3 weeks road trip Pacific highway, Baha, Rockies or similar.

Car import USA / Canada < Consumer | SCL Rotterdam
thanks for the storage offer mighty kind!
@mike (soucorp) & Dirk – yeah maybe I should just bite the bullet, but It kind of bothers me that in 1.5 years its $10000 down the toilet. Im budgeting for some big repairs in the future too.
Love the Duran Duran track, kind of fits the eightiestastic vibe.
@Howie – yep, need to stay positive, gotta be a solution to this one!
Anyhoo, here is a summary of the options for anyone considering similar.
Maybe I should have done this research BEFORE, but like I said the last time, next time I wont be so hasty.
It is not easy, being a genius :D Very much a first world problem here haha

yw! and I'm not German ;) lol

Did a check via NL. VAT is not 6%. Cars must be 30 years or older. At that age you will also not pay the import rights.

I think you have a good option there via Germany. Usually it will cost you between 1800 and 2500 USD for such services.

Actually it is less then 10k if you get it strait away. If you store it in the USA it will cost you some too I guess. 10k minus the storage and insurance costs.

Hope you find the way that satisfies you! and once you have it... you'll forget the whole thing and have a laugh about it when we are in an elderly house :p

    .

If you import it to Germany (or elsewhere),
you will incur extra transport cost, storage cost, handling cost, and insurance cost, and TIME.

By the end of it, you might save a few bucks... but not as much as the time and headache's worth.

Time is the only commodity you cannot buy.

    Good day...
I am getting my popcorn ready to watch this show. My feeling is you have already got yourself into a lot of organizational work, but let's see.

I once brought my personal US car back to Germany after a 7 month expatriate job in the US, so almost perfect conditions for importing (it was already 30 years old) and still lots of driving, extra costs etc, I'll spare the details but just think of actually getting to the ports, 2nd car, insurance coverage for road insurance (ask yourself where are you residing so traffic control can send you tickets, insurance has an address if you don't pay etc.), getting title transferred (translation), you have to insure it meets "standards", i.e. US-model not showing up in databases and you have to provide proof it matches a (in your case-swedish) local delivery.

In your case I have a very strong feeling you should first discuss with the seller how you can default on the purchase so both of you feel fairly treated.

If you should decide on leaving it in the US, mind you, it has to be moved out of the harbor pretty soon (or you pay their daily parking fees). If it is to be registered, states want to see a % of the value (let's just call it VAT for now, and search that number by state, NJ is 7%), so your friend (or you) pays that and also has the title in their name. Insurance (to my knowledge) has to be obtained by a legal resident...basically it is now their car (and you may or may not investigate how you can still have some assurance it returns to you afterwards). I very much doubt you will find an insurer with you residing outside the US. The VAT is "lost" once the title gets transferred over to you for your importation into (final destination Sweden) the EU.

BTW, who inspected the car prior to the purchase?

    cheers

    braq

    Ben,

Option 8 stills sounds good to me ! yes Im in Southern Cali 30miles north of LA

I will talk to my friend as he has a "private" garage that he houses his 8 cars and has a mechanic on staff in Augora Hills, never hurts to ask

the above pictures looked good so maybe you should send the "flaws" that you are talking about

w/o knowing the condition of the belts etc driving is a risk and shipping to LA from Jersey is about $1200 sometimes less depending on the shipper (thats less than what driving would cost)

if you get it here I can give you several mechanics that can refurbish the car for you and I can assist getting it to them.

Im currently keeping my late brother in laws DeLorean for Sister in-law and restoring it , so Im a little car rich (including my personal vehicle) but I understand the business of "keeping" up someones vehicle, insurance can be tricky but there are ways of working that if you have an "umbrella" policy

Ill shoot you a pm when I get the garage information..

that would be a hoot for you to be able to fly over and take a road trip with it!

ps the only salt on the roads here are from parrot heads spilling their margaritas as they cross the road! lol

ooooo fantastic offers. I reckon storage / free loan usage to the storer stateside is the best option till February.
Kind of made up mind to buy it as is solidish underneath and what i consider the sweet spot model for old/new/repairable and nice colour combo even if has tatty seats, rear valance, these are superficial fixes or “heavy patina” ;).
The engine bay is worrysome though with a split air inlet tract hose (see pic).
Preferred option remains store it USA for 20 months and then use the import specialists in Netherlands to get a German plate to avoid hassle, however those guys dont work for free of course but time is precious as pointed out. Also if the deal works out could be a few nice road trips in your staggering beautiful country. I have a nice little car over here already so no rush. Also when it comes into the Netherlands Spring 2017 > Road trip home via Nurburgring and Switzerland :D

A road trip to Cincinnati or California sounds dooable, belts change "in excellent running condition".
Here is the original text from the advert. Trader has excellent feedback and 10 years trade history.

"It just received belt service and its in excellent running and driving condition
Ready to enjoy this summer. This model was considered one of the last low maintenance cost Ferraris. Brand new soft top and 62,000 original miles"
    Not exactly war and peace!
Low maintenance cost - anyone agree here with that? haha!

The idea for an inspection is excellent, will book ASAP.
Found this on google....any better suggestions?
Lemon Protector Used Car Inspections and Evaluations - FAQ

Another alternative is Im a sole trader over here and was planning to start building hardtops and my website etc is programmed to start that whenever my train design contract runs out. So in theory i might get the VAT 25% off. At least whilst under the sole trader ownership. However Im somehow getting deeper into train design / senior role maybe next, lets see. Tax officials are not known for a sense of humour so trying to get a Ferrari through the books might be a bit special shall we say :D

    Here are the scabby bits:
    1) white marks on the glue line for the screen - is this early delamniating?
    2) door rust? also at the sill weld?
    3) missing rubber pip - yeah nothing but someone its a bad sign
    4) scabby seat squabs, needs new or new leather piece, quick glued patch makes it liveable though with reconnollisation
    5) is the paint pink? dunno. Heavy patina and original paint :D
    6) clutch has leaked but rust on subframe looks old so hopefully an old problem (?)
    7) The worst > unloved engine bay and split air inlet hose
    8) back box looks dodgy
    9) scabby valance > missing slats and very wobbly slats > suspect unsalvageable – solution fancy new back box and maybe a diffuser.
    10) Underside looks rusty but i think just unloved surface stuff

The idea for an inspection is excellent, will book ASAP.
