Hello All. I just checked the manual for my t for recommended oil type and noticed that
the spec consumption says .26 - .52 US gals every 600 miles. So, 2 quarts every 600 miles?
This is my first Ferrari and 2 quarts every 600 miles seems like a lot, but I getting used to it. Anyone have a different experience?

I put about 900 miles on the car since the last oil service and the dip stick shows just below min so I plan to add a quart and check again.

Also, I've seen a number of threads on the best way and time to check the oil. One says run it to temp and then turn off and wait 15 mins to check (letting oil drip down to the sump)
Manual says to check it at temp just after engine shut off.
However, my mechanic said to check it while hot with the engine running

    Thanks All.

    JZ

    .

Mondial t has a dry sump...

    normal dipstick method won't work.
you should follow the oil checking instruction in the manual.

Use the procedure described in the owner's manual. You can overfill the oil system if you don't check it properly and that can seriously damage your engine. My T did not use any oil and neither did any of my other Ferrari's that I owned over the years.

You might want to start looking for another mechanic.

It's amazing that a car bearing the F brand should use any oil at all. The 2 valve 308s had the same problem. Really disconcerting and on a long trip this means you have to carry a box of oil in that itty bitty luggage space.

Been driving for over 60 years - hot rods, POS cars - and dreamboats like my Rachel. Growing up, I drove anything that would start. But honestly, I have never driven anything without having at least one quart of (that car's) oil in the boot. It's super cheap comfort insurance.

And yes, I feel the same way about a spare tire "at the ready".

No, I don't need to carry an extra pair of shorts when I drive ---------- but oil and a spare ??? - - Hell yes !!!

    Cheers gang,

    Hank

I followed the manual and she took a quart. Will keep an eye on her as I put more notches in her dance card.

    Thanks All.

As per the manual- it is normal for these cars to consume a quart of oil every 600 miles.

Additionally, I think its best to check the oil while the engine is running at operating temperature, on a flat surface. Add oil until it reaches the "Max" line.

Yes that makes sense. Does it always have to be new oil?

Howie, you must have a few cans of Pep Boys Reclaimed Oil, left over from the old days. :)
So then, what is it if it isn't "new oil"? :):)

    Cheers,

    Hank

Thanks to all for the responses. I just wanted to see what others experienced in consumption.

You may want to consider the viscosity and brand of the oil vs the overall consumption. Many enthusiasts try different oils, with different results. At the moment I am using Mobil 1 15w50 oil, i've tried Shell 20w50. What kind are you using?

    My experience:

    I have a 1989 Mondial T with a little over 60k miles. I use Mobil 1 0w-40.

I've driven about 1200 miles since the last oil change, and consumption is minimal (maybe 1 cm on the dipstick).

Driving style can influence consumption too. When I'm traveling long distance on highway the consumption goes down.
