I finally took the time to record a video on the whistling sound my transmission makes with the engine running. Note : clutch and bearing has been replaced already

When the clutch pedal is NOT pressed, you can hear that singing/whining noise, even better when I'm revving the engine. When I press the clutch pedal, the sound is gone.

As you hear on the video: I'm pressing the clutch every few seconds

One guy told me the sound comes from the bearings inside the gearbox.

Other than that, the gearbox works normal, every gear works as it's supposed to do.

    Here's the video:

It's more a whining than whistling noise

... could also be a bearing in the transmission box from clutch to gearbox....

You're getting paranoid about this ! Drive that car and :
    1. It will go away in time ;
    2. Or you finally find out what whas wrong.

That's a howling sound. When you drive does the sound get worse when you are in gear and speed up? It is a similar sound that I heard when I was driving behind Dion who has a T as well.

Could be the input shaft bearing to the gearbox. When the clutch is in the input bearing is static ie no sound but when the clutch is let out even in neutral the input bearing is spinning ie a whining noise if defective. It may be the release bearing dragging that goes silent when under load....this can happen.
This needs to be sorted soon though or gear damage will occur. I would try and verify the sound with a steth scope, just to make sure it's not something simple like a waterpump or alternator. These obvioulsy would make a noise all the time so just check!
    Regards Bell Bloke.

OK, I have a final assessment of the noise. It's the bearings inside the transmission that make this noise. Of course, once you start replacing the bearings, other things may have to be replaced too because everything needs to be aligned again.

Now the most difficult part is to find replacement bearings for a T/348 fusebox. I guess I can start looking for these already. Anyone had theirs replaced?

Which bearing was it in the end, was it the gearbox input bearing?

all bearings are going to be replaced, as they all showed signs of wear.

One very important thing: get in touch with SKF instead of trying to get these through Ferrari !! Costs will be reduced by at least 50% as they are the manufacturers of most of these bearings...

Which one was grumbling the most, ie the one we could hear in the video? Just wanted to know ;-)
How are the bulk rings? Might be an idea to replace those also. Evertything else should be fine.
    Regards Bell.

The whistling comes from the fiberglass packing in the exhaust that was used back then, and now it's deteriorated and been "blown out" creating air flow under throttle. That's where you get the whistle

And it disappears when you push the clutch pedal?

    Mine does at least.

I'm no mechanic. But spent awhile talking with my tech about it, he was pretty adamant, though he could be wrong.

Ken, Stek's trans issue applies to a Mondial t, worlds apart from the previous variants. The transverse trans, sadly, appears to be a weak point, especially on the early models (89-90).

Well you could strip me bare, shave me all over, put me in a dress and a bonnet and call me daisy, I'd swear it was a transmission issue.....;-)
