I found this laying in the passenger footwell if my 1988 cab. The one I found was bright metal( this picture is from eBay). Searching the part number only results in "shim". Any idea where this belongs?

That's a fetzer valve shim I believe. It secures the valve against the firewall, while you are up in there you might want to get some 3 in one oil on it to stop it from squeeking.

Try to get one made in the US, they are better than the Chinese copies out there now.

Of course, it also looks like a poindexter shim, I dunno, been a while since I have seen one, they usually don't fall off if installed correctly.

Are there shims under the mounting plate?

Alden, if memory serves me correctly I think you maybe right, the poindexter shim is indeed situated in the passenger footwell area and actually the fetzer valve is in the trunk on the Mondial cars.
I stand corrected, many thanks Bell.

What's a Fetzer valve, and what is it used for?

Sorry Guys, it was a quiet day and I was feeling mischievous.....
Anyway if nothing else knowing your fetzer valves is to know your 80s classic that is 'Fletch'.... since we all own 80S cars here.
    Regards Bell

absolutely one of my favorites - and most quotable.

The shim is still a mystery though. Cannot figure it out, and it just appeared on the floor one day.

As Ron said, it looks like part of the top latch mechanism, I would look up there and see if something looks like it is missing or misaligned.

Dimensions or a rule laid next to the part in a pic to give us the size would help too.

I've been breaking up several Mondials and never came across this. Maybe it comes from something else?

And then I said to myself......

"Time to put work aside and go watch a movie and have some fun!!!"

    Sid

P.S - was it the 6th or 7th Fetzer valve?

Can't find anything amiss with the latches, but yes, the piece would seem to fit there:
