So another glorious drive along Devil's Backbone (~70+ F) in a TX February w/ oldest Gdau to 281 and almost back to just outside New Braunfels - at 52mi she started sputtering and died - pulled off and waited for tow truck - cooled down and started her up - (always started) and nursed my way to a suitable tow location - meanwhile 13yr old Gdau who loves the Mondial was facetiming pals regarding how embarrassing this episode was (she cringes when folks video which occurs a lot to my surprise) I thought I fixed this problem years ago w/ thicker gauge wires to the Fuel Pump Relay based on expert advice via Scott Magnusson who's posts I always learn from - started right up off the tow truck and into the garage later on - Before I spring for a new fuse board is there anything I should be looking into?
    Signed,
Any drive in the 3.2 is better than all others.

It's been said before, until you replace the board everything else is just patchwork (in other words, the board is the baseline). ;)

Could be a lot of gremlins to cause your symptoms, but mine did that when 2 of my spark plug extensions on opposite banks "popped off" during a drive.

I had been replacing the plug clips the day before and didn't re-install the extensions properly.

Thanks all - I'll check the plugs...and I did fill up w/ Exxon vice the normal Shell but I don't think(?) that is it. Will follow up on boards - great drive up until then...(-*

First thing to check is if it is only running on one bank, or if you have misfiring or non-firing cylinders like I did, easy to do with a spark checker.

After that you can start tracing the problem thru the usual suspects of ECU/coil/wires/extenders/plugs/+etc.

Sounds more like a fuel problem. Press the plunger down with the ignition key on, engine off. You should hear the fuel pump running. You could have a leaky accumulator. Check that by pulling the return hose off, and see if there is any fuel leaking out there.

How old is the fuel pump relay? Is it time for a replacement? (Maybe carry a spare?) Also, you can make a jumper wire to bypass the fuel pump relay...

You can bypass the circuit board entirely for the fuel pump relay. Although I agree with Wade that you (as well as everyone else with an original fuse board, including me) will have to upgrade our boards, bypassing the board for the fuel pump relay may allow you to kick the can down the road a bit.

    Good luck!

Question for the brain trust from a 2 wire electrician: How exactly does one determine amperage draw on the fuel pump? Want to eliminate wiring/FP issues before I pull the trigger on a new board. Thanks,

BTW Fuse on bypass Relay is 30Amp - Fuse on board for FP is 15A.

An additional 30 Ampere fuse to the fuel pump relay ??????

    Why that ???

The relay only has to switch the switching current (less than 2 Ampere) but not the pump power. If the fuse looks like yours, there might be a problem with the wiring to the relay (Short circuit) with rising temperature. No problem at cold start, but problem with warmed up relay and therefore rising resistant. For me it looks like a broken cable from the fuse to the relay or a wobble contact at the relay. IMO the pump is not the problem, because it's after the relay.

Just for your amusement ... see the various electrical gremlins and the solutions at my thread http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/mondial/501126-mondial-3-2-coup%E9-59769-a.html

I doubt that amperage draw for/from the fuel pump is the issue. There was a reason why the relay on the board was bypassed instead of replaced.

On the wiring diagram, the circuit goes from the pump, through the C1 connector and then straight to the board via Connector W.

BTW, all Mondials except the t use the same fuel pump.

Hi 2281GT and thanks very much for your insights - Previous owner added the 30A inline fuse w/ the "relay fix" - I'll check connections and definitely review your url -

Thanks a lot Wade - I'm looking up the wiring diagram - but, in my case the relay connects into the board so I'm wondering what was achieved by removing the relay from direct connection to the board.

Hi Wade - Does the "25P" on the connection line refer to color? (P=Beige)

Yeah, that's too much workaround for me. Trying to troubleshoot, guess and fix work like that is a really painful. Continuously.

Removing the board for inspection isn't too difficult, so it's worth a look.

    This was mine:

    Actually, that's 2.5 mm², and yes, P = Beige.

    Pin 7 on Connector W.

Sorry, Faber, IMO you NEED to change/repair/reconnect the fusepanel board.
If someone has connected SUCH a Bypass there MUST be a reason for.
