Hi, just posted a couple of pics from one of my old brochures and suddenly noticed that the QV has only one wing mirror. I know the early testerossa had the 'unique' one to get around aero issues, but does anyone know if any markets (Italy?) actually sold them with just one?

The pic of the cars RHS is clearly a finished piece, am I the last to notice (or first to care)!?!?[IMG][IMG]

And to make up for an off-beat post, here's a couple of other bits that may be of interest about what F had to say at the time.....

I have seen many Mondial 8's, but almost never with only a single side mirror. I suppose 2 was a standard.

Yeah I've never seen an 8 or QV with only one, nor a 'blanking plate' in the parts manual. The pics are from my QV brochure, so seamed odd to go from 2 mirrors on an 8, to 1 on a QV. Wondered if it was a way to promote sports lineage, i.e. driver focussed car. Don't have an 8 or 3.2 brochure to compare. Never seen a 308 single mirror car either.

Perhaps we need to make blanking plates and corner the market fast, before all the owners who want to be original lose a mirror!!!

I think it was because at the time, in Italy, it was common for cars to have only one mirror. 2 mirrors was quite an innovation!

We had the same in the Uk, and it was (is) legal, but not normally at that price! Given the size of the Italian market, I was just surprised at the use of the car for the pics. Maybe they were available as they were for the domestic market - they are LHDrive.

No. Even today, you are legally only required to have two mirrors. Your choice of one external (it must be on the driver's side in that case) and one internal mirror, or two external mirrors (in a vehicle where internal rear vision is or may be obstructed). That's why station wagons always had 2 external mirrors. The 3rd mirror is still optional from a legal stand point. But if you have a pax side mirror, it must be adjustable from the driver's seat. Hence the Mondial's electric mirrors.

No connection to innovation; cost cutting plus less drag.

Most likely "fake" QVs: 8s dressed as QVs for the brochure shots.

Cool, I couldn't recall the blanking plate in the parts manual.

Interesting that RHD cars also had the approach. Again, hadn't noticed it (or lack of it) on 8s.

For LHD cars I wonder what difference if any it made to smoothing airflow to the intake by the pax having no mirror.

Not enough to improve my 1/4 mile times LOL.

Mirrors are the single most drag-intensive and noise creating objects on the bodywork, and relatively expensive. On a sports car, it makes sense to drop one.

The Mondial 8 Homologation Certificate dated July 1980 shows only one mirror. The Homologation Certificates for all other Mondials show two mirrors. However, for the QV, I don't have the Coupe version Cert, just the Cab (again, two mirrors).

Great info Wade, never really looked at the 8 much. Difficult to tell if the pics for interior, engine and exhaust are different cars. Odd quirk of fate that the PAC mirror a final thought/production feature? Perhaps they realised the QV was finally powerful enough to handle the drag!!!!!

Also perhaps explains why my dual mirror switch is a BMW OEM part!

Better a BMW part than maybe something from a Fiat Panda. ;)

Incl. the mirror, housing and motors; BMW 6 series E24.
The rear plastic frame and attachement to the body are Ferrari parts.

Yeah, I always wonder what the deal was for F buying those from BMW. I thought the rubber 'cover' that goes over the mirror arm was an F part too, but assume that was all part of the 6 series.

Interesting inter-company purchasing. Almost a precursor to the 'Lamborghini-Audi what could have been'!! Not sure which bits of a 1980s Ford I'd choose for mine, if the F&F merger had happened... although I did see some modern Mondeo wheels that I thought might have suited!

I assume the '8' is just the pax E24 system then; or that F updates the QV when the E24 went dual mirror??? (I know BMW were right/spartan, but even my 80's 3 series had two mirrors, surely the 6 did too).

Money Money Money. Developing, tooling and certifying a mirror is big bucks and time.

No, those are Ferrari; they kill the QV's initial wind noise issue.

Ferrari still does that for major developments that are out of reach for a small company. The Modena seats are refoamed Porsche frames for ex.
