I am a Miata owner, but I am looking at becoming a Ferrari owner in the future. I have owned Miatas for the last 18 years (all generations) and love them all, but they never remained stock for long. I am a supercharging-aholic and feel that it brings out the best in the Miata. With the addition of 80-150hp, the Miata is transformed into the sportscar it always wanted to be! I would say at this power level it is similar to a classic Ferrari in straight line performance with the exceptional handling and balance of the Miata. I have a desire to build a somewhat classic '50s to '60s style roadster using a supercharged Miata drivetrain. Imagine 1500lb and 250whp!

The Ferraris that I have particular interest in however are the Ferrari 308 and Testarossa. They always had a unique timeless quality to them and I think they would be very fun cars to drive!

    Hi, welcome to FChat!

Something like, oh, an NA Miata with a Simpson Design Italia Kit, supercharged? ;)

I absolutely agree about the 308!

Oh, you will know me on Miata.net as Gord96BRG... Which explains the supercharged Italia and 308 affinities. :D

    Welcome!

Fellow Miata fan / owner here. My biggest, only really, Miata regret is that I didn't keep my 1999 NB and turn it into a track car. I won't make that mistake with my NC when the time comes... Great little cars that totally embody the spirit of what a sports car should be.

Thanks! Gord I have read your posts on the Miataforum and think the supercharged NA Miata you have it a beauty! I like the first gen the best... hard to beat the original recipe.

My idea of a Ferrari-like Miata is closer to something like a Ginetta G20 with the Miata drivetrain and FFS supercharger. About 2/3 the weight of the Miata :). Would want to redo the body a bit though with more round, classic style headlights... somewhat like the Simpson kit, except shrunk.

My prior Miata was a silver '00 LS. I bought it new and owned it until 2014. It was a GREAT roadster... both stock and modified. I liked the lines on it that were a little more swooping and yet classic '60s somewhat. I ended up changing nearly every part on the car so that it only had the body panels and paint that were original. Swapped in the 6-speed and 3.91 torsen, supercharged with 230whp on E85, FM suspension, upgraded brakes, rollbar, black interior and cloth seats from a '94 (better seats than the '00 seats). Had a lot of fun with it and miss it. I have a red (but not as nice of red as Ferrari red grrrrrr....) Miata NC now. It is a nice sportscar, but is missing a bit of the soul of the NA and NB models. I intend to change that with time.

On a sidenote, I would be quite curious if a maker like Ferrari would make a top tier lightweight 4-cylinder, front engine RWD roadster. Would not compete with Miata, as it would be Ferrari. Imagine what they could build. Would it be an oxymoron for an auto maker like Ferrari to build a small lightweight, classic type roadster? Something small... Miata size, with a normally aspirated 2.0 making around 300hp @ 9000rpm :D and a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission, all-aluminum body on a tubular frame, etc. 2000lb curb weight max. Price would be in the $50-75K range. One can dream.

Welcome to the forum and good luck on your hunt for a Ferrari. Ferraris were never meant to be "bottom end" cars. What you described above would be an Alfa Romeo Spider. I'm guessing they're still going to come out with one based on the Miata? So in other words, what you described above is a Miata.

When Enzo started the company he focused on V12s. I think the only reason they went down to V8s was for volume and to be sustainable.

I can relate to the Miata sentiment. I owned and raced them for five years, and built two customer cars (as owner of Blacktop Racing - a Miata and RX-7 specialist). One of the appealing things with Miatas is how much bang you get for your buck, and if something wore out or broke, it was only a minor cost to replace or fix. Also, I never felt nervous or worried about running the snot out of it. None of that applies with any Ferrari.

Initially, yes - but the first F1 Championship winning Ferrari had 4 cylinders. Ferrari has won F1 titles with 4, 6, 8, 10, and of course 12 cylinder engines.

The Dino was successful as a smaller, less expensive Ferrari with 6 cylinders - there's no reason they couldn't repeat that success with a new Dino with a modern V6.
