Well, I was all set to have Terry give the Mondial the once over this spring until I called his number, found it disconnected, and then searched.

    This was not expected.

Probably the best Ferrari mechanic in the mid west if not the entire country. :(

Most people in the Ferrari community have no clue as to the number of significant Ferraris that have flowed in and out of his shop over the years .

    A real shame.

+1... That's terrible news indeed.. Terry was fantastic, he checked out a car 30miles away from his shop and when I ask how much I owned him he said "don't worry about it"

For over 30 yrs he has a reputation of being one of the finest vintage ferrari mechanics in the country. Being way under the radar he got more than enough work just through referrals and hearsay.

"A rare Ferari engine sold for $600K cash"....was this related to Ocean Joe's thread in Vintage??

    Death and taxes.

Still, it wasn't a huge judgement, if he had friends to help get the IRS settled.

Terry was great picked up and delivered my Ferrari, when he saw my race car in the garage it sparked him to bring his race car to the track but I only saw him there that one weekend, I think he did not fare too well and had some sorting to tend to.

On a side note, back in the 80's I read that my uncle had been sentenced to 20 years for tax evasion. When I call to express my concern he just laughed. I said twenty years is no laughing matter. He said "Heck I'm 70 years old, by the time I'm done with all of my appeals I'll be dead!"

We are very sorry to hear this news. I don't know Mr. Myr, but I'm familiar with his work.

We're the official sponsor of this sub-forum and we'd certainly like to help out anybody who needs to find a new trusted shop to work on their exotics.

We're not that far from Michigan, in South Central Indiana, and to make up for the added distance we'd like to offer a 10% discount to anybody who mentions this thread on your first service. I think you'll find our prices are very competitive even without the discount, and we'd be honored to have the chance to earn your business.

If you would like, we have numerous satisfied customers we can put you in contact with before you send us your babies.

We also offer free car transport on all major services to anywhere in the continental US.

I just tried to get in touch with Terry, but his cell phone mail box was full and his home didn't answer. He drove to Windsor Candad, with all of it's attendant traffic, in '04 to inspect the GTC I ultimately bought. After the purchase, he did $10K worth of work on the car without asking for a dime until he was done, and I'd never even met him. The car came to me here in Houston and shortly thereafter, the water pump and radiator he'd repaired began to leak, so he paid to have the car shipped to and fro' so he could get it repaired!

Over the years, we spoke many times about things I couldn't immediately repair and he was always a generous, thoughtful and highly intelligent guy. Last spring, he called and said he was delivering a Maserati to a client here in Houston and wanted to stop by, say "hello" and see if he could help me with anything. He accomplished more in two hours than I had in two months! Super nice guy, very, very unassuming and low key. In a million years, you'd never pick him as a brilliant and superior Ferrari mechanic. Definitely one of the best. Ironically, I'd also have to add "honest and hard working" to his list of attributes.

I talked to him last week. He couldn't get to my car right away, but said he'll get back to me when he can. So...he's apparently still at it.

Typical IRS jack boot tactics to keep the masses in check. Beat down a fairly profiled "regular joe" while letting the true corporate criminals (they know who they are) go untouched. Who really suffers here? Ferrari owners of course. Now we'll pay many percentages more for what could prove to be sub-standard service. Woe is us.

He's a great guy and a damn good mechanic...as good as they get, but lower profile (except as far as the IRS is concerned). Hope they'll show some leniency. steve

OK, I spoke with Terry this PM and he was in good spirits and still fixin' exotics! I wrote a letter to the judge pleading for leniency and he was glad to hear it. He wanted any letter of a similar nature sent on to him, so that his lawyer could present them to the judge. If you're so inclined, email me privately and I'll help you with addresses and such. In my heart of hearts, I think his incarceration, at age 71, is a waste of government funds and not much of a deterent. Better to serve him with a stringent fine +/- community service. Maybe he could repair IRS vehicles! steve

I for one am sick of hearing about this cheater in the service business. As someone who has been dabbling in the Ferrari world in this area since the 70's I have known more than a couple of people who have had trouble with this guy and some of the work I have seen that he did was mediocre at best. What ticks me off in the service business is quoting a job only to have a customer tell you that your prices are out of line, that "so & so" will do the job for 20-30% less only to find out latter that they did it for cash to avoid taxes. I know of two shops in this area that have lost jobs to Mr. Myr's lowball quotes because he cheats on his taxes. I think I'll send a letter to the judge letting him know the damage clowns like Myr do to people trying to legitimately run their businesses.

valid point. this is common in many industries. The problem is that this market is very small here and it does make an impact on others. Now general contractors or roofers doing this isn't hurting the other guys as much because its a much bigger space.

Your experience certainly doesn't comport with mine. When Terry was in Houston, he waited patiently for 2 hours in front of my house for me to return on delayed air flight. Worked like the super knowledgeable pro he is for a couple of hours on my cars, absolutely refused payment and a free dinner, and headed to Austin to do a PPI on another Ferrari.

When my car was first worked on by Terry, there was no "under bid", only the reality that the cost of fixing these cars is time + parts. Over the years, he was never too busy to talk me through stuff by phone and he repaired and set the advance curves on 4 of my Ferrari distributors. I had to beg him to send me invoices and they were always fair, when he finally sent them. When he paid to have my car shipped to and fro' from Texas to Michigan to re-do the water pump and radiator, there was no grumbling and never the mention of "fixing something for a guy 2000 miles away he'd never met, nor would likely ever see.

When the car was there, the second time, and was a "captive audience", I wanted the transaxle leak fixed. The quote was "time and materials"....no price, no under or over bid. And when it was done it seemed more than fair to me.

I would strongly disagree with the notion that his work is shoddy, "low balled" or any other perjorative beliefs. We human beings are complex and this wouldn't be the first time that a man with excellent qualities also had a major disconnect and inconsistency. (His honesty with this customers v. his refusal to pay taxes to our government)

I would still strongly recommend Terry, and without hesitation.
