Swim with three retired Navy Seals on Lake Norman next week to raise awareness of Operation Restored Warrior, which helps veterans struggling to transition back into their communities.

In August 2013, retired Seals Shannon Rusch, Rich Graham and Troy Pusateri swam 14.5 miles in Lake Norman to bring attention to veteran suicide rates and raise money for soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Join the Seals at 11 a.m. Aug. 1 for a 1.2-mile swim from the Blue Parrot Grill, which overlooks the lake at the end of Pinnacle Lane off N.C. 150 West in Mooresville. The event is limited to 20 swimmers.

After the first leg of the swim, the Seals will continue swimming 12.2 miles to the Rusty Rudder restaurant in Cornelius. The swim is expected to end by 7 p.m., when a celebration is planned at the Rusty Rudder with live music and silent and live auctions.

“We are swimming for our brothers, sisters, cousins, mothers, fathers, friends and all other loved ones that have worn the uniform in service and that have given all selflessly, but are not getting the support they have earned,” Rusch said in announcing this year’s swim.

“I say to them, ‘You are not alone in this fight, there is an answer, a brotherhood of warriors called ORW.’ ”

Rusch founded SilentShadow, which provides personal small-firearms training and corporate motivational speaking events and is hosting the swim. Numerous local businesses are sponsoring the event
