Wife & I are going to be in Raleigh-Durham over weekend. Any recos for good Carolina Q? Both vinegar & tomato based styles much admired. Thanks!...T

For every NC person who answers, you'll probably get a totally different and individually biased answer.

I like Allen & Sons (the Chapel Hill location) and Bullock's in Durham.

Thanks, Daniel. That's what I am looking for: local bias! Will probably cross-ref suggestions with Yelp reviews, suggestions from our hosts, and then, since I have the Mrs. with me, do the drive-by, sniff-test (i.e., alas, no broken down, backwoods BBQ shacks this time!). Thanks again…T

Hi Tom. Another vote here for Allen and Son in Chapel Hill area. Are you looking for lunch spot or sit down dinner Q? PM me if you need any suggestions for your weekend. Would offer to meet you but this is FCA weekend at the shore and Janet and I will not be around.

Hi Keith…Thanks for +1 on Allen & Sons. Thinking lunch. Usually, when wife & I go on BBQ trail, we share a small plate & try to sample 2 or 3 joints in an area. BTW, looking at A&S menu online: I assume "stew" means Brunswick stew?!? I hope so; I have not had good BS in more years than I care to remember! Is that the FCA event in Beaufort? Have a great time and safe travels…T

Yes, Brunswick stew. The B.S. at Bullocks is also really nice.

A place you *might* consider is Mama Dips, but I think its more soul food that BBQ (IMHO).

As Daniel's lukewarm note indicates, Dips is not worth it (used to be). More of a fried chicken joint in its day. Where are you staying? Big Ed's in Raleigh downtown has been a local favorite for decades...there is also Clyde Cooper's but it closes at 6:00 or something. Durham has the best restaurant scene without question this this region.

I am staying near the NCSU campus in Raleigh. After living in Memphis & being spoiled by some great fried chicken places, I tend to avoid them, since everything seems to pale in in comparison to the reality/memory. Big Ed's looks like a good option. Thanks…T

If in Hillsborough, then Hillsborough BBQ company is best (better than those mentioned in my opinion). To make it better, Mystery Public House craft beer is right next door. Excellent pints for $4.

I should have stated, if in Durham, you should do much more than BBQ. Durham was voted the 'foodiest' city in the south beating out Savannah, Charleston, etc. There are many excellent places in downtown Durham to choose from.

Thanks, Steve! I'm focused on Q since this is my first trip to Carolinas in a couple of years, but am certainly open to other options…T

Tom. another vote also in Durham for Big Ed Mitchell's near the DBAP. The guy is a legend. If you are downtown Raleigh and want to give your fried chicken theory a test, try Beasley's one of our famous local chef's joints.

If you want very informal, another vote for Allen & Son. If you want a more upscale experience, try The Pit in either Raleigh or Durham. The Durham location will be a little less formal and have outside seating.

If you want a FANTASTIC burger experience & EXCELLENT micro-brewed beer, try Bull City Burger & Brewery in Durham, you will not be disappointed.

Bbq'd tofu & takes reservations?!? Hmm...Not typical def of a bbq ”joint”, but may do the trick for a more classy dinner option with our hosts. Thanks, Greg...T

Dear NC Tifosi...Just back from Raleigh. Wife & I had great time, thanks in large part to your great food suggestions. Long story, short... if you can find an excuse to be in The Triangle, go!

Allen & Sons - gem hidden in the forest! Bbq - awesome. Wife loved the Brunswick stew.

The Pit & Beasley - good food, nice vibe in downtown Raleigh. Biscuits @ Beasley were great. And, a proper Moscow Mule.

Hillsborough BBQ - great ribs. Wife liked the brisket - huge compliment from a native Texan!

Mitch's Tavern - near NCSU. Good bbq sandwich.

We even drove to Lexington for famous Lexington Barbecue. Lived up to its rep.

Again, thank you for your suggestions...T
