Word of mouth recommendation is probably the single most important factor. But what is a good experiece for some might not be for another so let's dig deeper than the obvious when selecting a shop.

When I visit the shop what should I look for? What questions should I ask besides labor rate? I've had a number of recommendations and they all seem to be capable. What else is there?

Check for online reviews from customers.

Eyeball the shop for cleanliness and organization.

For Ferraris in particular, ask what training the mechanics have had on these cars.

It also depends what you are looking for. Routine maintenance, engine/transmission rebuild, some degree of restoration or resuscitation?
