My buddy is selling his low mileage '94 Mazda RX-7 with a high level LS3 swap. This car is dialed and has far more spent into it than any other RX-7. I've seen it at a show and ridden in it personally, it's next level. The car is also FAST!! It is a 10second car if the tires could hook up better.

It has 5 years of meticulous work and a combined spending of $120k in upgrades and work. I think an LS swapped FD is very much like a modern day Shelby Cobra. You get the svelte and timeless looks of the third-gen RX-7 and its lightweight and responsive chassis, combined with the power and reliability of the LS3.

Here are a few details from him:

I have spent a total of $120K in this car and I am asking over $55K less, minus the time and monumental effort. I will breakdown a few key items: The engine swap and drivetrain upgrade was $30K after all of the custom fabrication and install work. The combined paintwork was $12K+ (PAINT only, not even talking about the OEM body aero parts). The interior has $15K in it alone. Add that up and we're at $57K... not including EVERYTHING else... and not including the CAR ITSELF.

So with that said, whoever buys this is getting incredible value. If I tried to build this car again today, I couldn't. Not only due to the lack of time but because many of the rare parts that I have amassed are simply too difficult to obtain again.

Another unique benefit is that I have cataloged everything done to the car to excruciating detail, which you can read all about here: Rx-7 | Grand Mighty

HIGHLIGHTS: 25K ORIGINAL MILES Brilliant Black R2 Model. Clean Title. Clean and consistent CarFax history. LS3 Swap, not a LS1, not a LS6... a Gen IV, modern, 6.2L V8. TR6060 Transmission, not a T56... a significantly better shifting, triple syncro'd, updated model. Cobra 8.8" Rear End with Ford Racing LSD, Driveshaft Shop Axles, and Custom Driveshaft Shop Aluminum Driveshaft with Billet CV Joint. This was an expensive swap with zero shortcuts. Repainted with a high quality 2-stage PPG Global Brilliant Black, not the 90s Mazda single-stage paint.

He sold the original 1.3L Rotary when it was removed for the LS3 swap.

The fact that he started with a rare low mileage black R2 is an excellent base. This car stock, with its mileage and color and package, would be worth $32k+ easy. Add on the $100k in upgrades and work... the deal is amazing at $52k. I would buy this in a heartbeat if I didn't already have so many cars :( Plus the level of execution is simply unseen before. This car does not compare with other V8 swapped RX7s, not by a mile.

    Why is he selling it?

I like OEM cars and would personally spend that kind of money on a Ferrari but.. I might know someone who might be interested.

Very cool build. Does it have a CARB EO sticker for the swap or will it have to be sold outside of CA?

He's the type of guy that does cars for the build and upgrading. I guess he just likes the pain. I told him not to sell it, but he said he spent all his time building this car, and now he doesn't have the time to actually use it.

I think it would actually be easy to go back to a Rotary since everything else possible is done already. With the rear end already upgraded and the AiM dash, it makes hooking up a Rotary easy. But why would you. You will never get the "get in and drive" ability like you do with the LS3, and confidence is everything. Plus, this V8 is ludicrously fast...

He was looking into the BAR for the swap but the car will come smogged.

I forgot to mention the location, the car is located in San Jose/Bay Area, CA. Just email him if you have any questions.

Nicely done. If it had a 20b in it I could see it selling fast. I have a 93 R1 in black and was planning to do my interior much the same as this car. Alcantara, aim dash, Spirit R seats. I can appreciate the workmanship. Just not a fan of the powertrain. In my opinion that is why it will be a difficult sale. I have friends with V8 swaps in 90's 3 series BMW's that are cool cars. That makes sense to me. Problem is rotary guys are fond of the rotary engine and a high dollar LS swap just isn't as appealing. Especially for HP levels easy to reliably attain with a big Turbo swap on a 13b. If you are a V8 guy would make more sense to buy a C6 Z06. Would love to see the car one day though. Whoever buys it is going to get a really nice ride they couldn't replicate for the same money. Good luck with the sale.

LS swaps have ruined these cars...period.

the only engine swap I would consider is the three rotor.

Cool car with much work done and looks to be done right. A three rotor as mentioned by slownrusty would be incredible....or perhaps an LS7 motor with its titanium connecting rods, etc.

Car sold quickly. It was a bargain price. Car was on the market for only 2 weeks prior to the Fchat post. Pretty much sold within a day of being posted here. It is near impossible to find this level of execution on an Rx7.

Jeez, that's about perfect, if not for the black (ba-a-a-a-a-ad idea in blister-inducing TX).
I'm sorta glad I missed the listing, in spite of the color....... it might have been too tempting.
I have a white '94 with a dead riced motor (thank you, 19 y.o. aspiring F&F tuning catalog experts!) waiting for the time to do a similar build.... but the level of that one is beyond impressive.

This could've been one of you, but ya'll hesitated and acted too slow :).

The new owner made an instagram page for this car. He's actually a sales executive at Ferrari of New Jersey, so he knows a good car when he sees one. There's a video in his page with a Ferrari instructor driving the beast.
