1967 ISO Grifo Project

This is about as rough as a restoration project gets! This will hurt. Looks like the rear bumper fell off due to rust. Wow. Good luck to the buyer, most likely for parts. Or is there a brave sole out there who wants to tackle this?

 

I don't know, but for me this would be too far gone to be considered for a restoration project, although I suppose it all comes down to time and money, both of which would have to be in abundant supply

 

So is the bid up to $10,100.00 pounds to purchase this vehicle or are
the owners paying that amount to remove it from the premises?

 

What a frightful state that car is in. I had to chuckle at the previous £75k reserve, which seems a bit .....optimistic. One does wonder what the asking price will be for the matching engine/transmission and associated parts once the chassis deal has been done. I am amazed at the speed with which the grifo market has moved. Less than 2 years ago a rough but complete GL300 with auto box was with a UK dealer at £45k, and I recall Bonhams selling a complete RHD IR 8 project at goodwood some years ago for £29k ....I half thought of bidding at the time, but had no space!
Now suddenly the market is wide awake and we are seeing £200-400k. I do love the grifo and I have put this on my watch list to see just how high it goes. I hope this sells to someone really brave, dedicated and really really really rich!

The Grifo uses a unibody construction and the frame is boxed sections of sheet metal, these cars like all italian cars of the era are susceptible to rust, even when taken care of. I can't see much of the frame being left and it looks like every panel has a dent. The stainless side trim and bumpers look OK.

or........If you wanted to build a Bizzarrini then the front suspension frame and suspension components is worth 10 K that would be my guess.

 

You are basically buying a serial number.

 

Agree. It´ll turn up as a Bizzarini.

 

The last Bizzarrini "serial number" sold for $138,000 a few days ago in Switzerland. Just sayin'...

 

But, this is an ISO serial number....Right?

 

I'd love to know how it ended up in this condition? What a shame!

Yes so it would have to be removed, could be used for a fake Grifo, but those are harder to make.

The most difficult part to reproduce or find is the cross member that holds the shocks, second is the main floor pan. These are joined with bottom rails and tube frame, so you have a structure similar to how a Jaguar is built. You can see the structure in this original Bizzarrini photo. All of the suspension pieces are interchangeable if you make the version with the DeDion rear.

When Bizzarrini left Iso he held the copyright to the name "Grifo" Rivolta wanted it back, so the deal they made was for Rivolta to give Bizzarrini enough parts to build some cars in trade for the name. Ironically Bizzarrini no longer has the copyright on "Bizzarrini , so the last few cars were called Grifo's.

There is one in Vermont similar to this, it's behind a restoration shop with a tarp over it. The body is in much better condition.

Don't know the status, I live a few thousand miles away. I tried to get some guys to go look at it but no one had the energy.

 

At that price the buyer, assuming he is doing a restoration on another car, can probably get enough parts off the car to make it worth his while. Heck, he may even come out ahead.

 

Don't forget shipping

 

shipping should be cheap, because you could probably get most of the car into a small box...

What a shame. It's hard to imagine how a nice car can be so badly neglected.

I'm surprised it sold for the price it did. In reality there is maybe some chrome and mechanical parts. The balance is scrap metal. All I can imagine is that some unscrupulous buyer needs the serial number for a stolen car.

 

It the cheapest way, being able to tell your friends (and enemies) that you just bought an Iso Grifo.
