HMMMM, something not right here. Straman must have moved to italy. 1969 DeTomaso Mangusta Spyder for sale | Hemmings Motor News
Not the real one, that is for certain. "car completely restored, totally new, the car is like a prototipo tha was exposed in 1966 to geneve motor show, and never been product" Pretty vague wording or possibly lost in translation, but does allude to the fact it is "like" the prototype. That's a big number for any Mangusta, let alone a modified one...
The number is definitely well above what I think the car would actually sell for. Ironically it would probably be worth much more had they left it alone. There have been several solid Mangusta sales in the over $300K range, so the number isn't wrong for a Mangusta. Even rusted project Mangustas are in the $200K range, from what I've seen. This car is a rather poor interpretation of the original (and only) Mangusta Spyder. The details are all wrong and this car lacks the finesse of the original (which I have had the pleasure of inspecting first-hand). It's been for sale going on two years now. Maybe a price adjustment is in order, or maybe as the market continues to climb it will sell.
That's quite an insult! Mr. Straman had a great deal more taste than the "designer" of this abortion.
I'm not sure what is worse: the butchering of one of the great designs in history or the two tone paint.
This is the "real" one. Notice the deckled louvers, the chrome window trim and of course the interior, wheels, signal lights, A/C (rear) louvers, 1-piece bumper... Oh, and the condition overall. While the styling is not to everyone's taste, I would be extremely happy to have this parked in my garage. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wonder what the VIN number is? Is that belt pulley system normal? LOL It looks like it came of a Merak
All Mangusta's have that belt pulley system, only this one is a little brighter than most! All ancillaries are driven from the rear of the engine.
Merak slights aside it's much easier from a maintenance standpoint than having everything shoved up against the firewall. Less "clean looking" but it does allow for the possibility of adding on a supercharger ... Now doesn't this beast just cry out for one?
I never noticed the pulleys before, yes much easier, although a hatch in the firewall could solve that. I think this car is priced as all Mangusta should be 300 K + but then it is only a Giugiaro design
I have a couple of hatches in my firewall (there's a joke there somewhere?) and yes it really helps but this is soooo much easier. It does reduce the area behind the engine though and thus spare storage and other things suffer. Trade offs ... Gandini would NOT have made such an error! I wonder if Citroen & Maserati & Giulio Alfieri stole this from Detomaso for the SM & Merak? Or, perhaps Giugaro stole from himself!
