Came across this family photo taken in late June 1963 at the Italian border of the St. Bernard pass and noticed the white spyder just to the left of the tour bus. Is it a Lancia Flaminia Touring? Alfa 2600 Touring spyder? Jon

Tail lights look big for an Alfa. Could be a Flaminia.

I don't think it's a Flaminia (I used to own one), but I can't say for certain what it is.

    My guess: it's a Peugeot 404 Convertible.

Very true. It looks more FIAT or British, maybe Sunbeam Alpine.

I think it could be a Triumph Vitesse, but I'd really need more resolution to do anything but guess.

The resolution is not good but it looks like the tail lights are high and wide. That is why I rejected the Alfa 2000/2600 and is why I doubt the Triumph and Alpine.

Their tail lights all tend to be tall and narrow.

That is why I considered the Lancia a possibility.

Just looked at pictures of the 404. It has tall narrow tail lights too.

Whatever it is it looks to me like it has big tail lights. That was not terribly common in the period.

Blown up it looks to have the proportions of and the belt line trim of a Caravelle convertible but it isn't.

You are right, tail lights too wide for it to be a Vitesse. Hmmm.

    Maybe a FIAT 1500 convertible?

The photo was taken in late June 1963, although there was snow on the ground, the weather wasn't inclement. I've tried to get a better resolution but had no success. At first, I wondered if it might be a Maserati 3500 Touring Spyder or an Alfa 2600 Touring Spider, but the taillights looked too broad, so thought it might be Flaminia.

I've been sorting through some old 35mm slides my family took from 1960-64 when stationed in Germany. Lots of interesting old cars (e.g., Isetta on the Autobahn) but this is the only slide that had anything that I thought might be of interest to F-Chat members.

Thanks for your comments and thoughts on what it might be.

That car is an Alfa Romeo 2000-2600 spyder by Touring, no doubt.
The Flaminia is longer, the rear lights are different and there aren't air intakes on the sides.

This great spring weather in that altitude. I guess in May or early June. Altitude is 8.100 ft.
I notice a significant drop in idle speed of my carb cars on those mountains.

    Best Regards from Germany

The birds on the roof (in the old photo) seem to be vultures .... ;) :D.

No safe tip on the car, but I would exclude the Maserati 3500 Touring spider.

    Cheers, Bernhard

Martin, the photo was taken in mid-June 1963, en route from Hemer, NRW to Rome. Driving a then-new Hillman Super Minx.

Thank you for the your "update" photo!

    Jon,
have mercy on me :) I just saw, that you already mentioned in your first post, during which month the photo was taken.

I allow me to add, that it's the Grand St. Bernard Pass, since there is also a Petit St. Bernard Pass on the border France/Italy.

    Best Regards
    Martin
